It’s 15 July 2012, and Salva Ruiz is celebrating on a wet pitch at the A. Le Coq Arena in Tallinn. Spain have just won the U19 European Championship for the ninth time, their second consecutive title. But it’s young Salva’s first taste of footballing success, and the 17-year-old is loving every minute, despite only making one appearance in the tournament. At the time considered one of Spain’s future talents at full-back, he would go on to make his first team debut for Valencia a few months later in the Copa del Rey, before his eighteenth birthday.

Castellón, in contrast, were at rock bottom at that point. They had finished ninth in the fourth tier, with a three point deduction for just not turning up to one of the matches.

In truth, if you had approached young Salva in Estonia, and told him that in 10 years time, he would be playing for the albinegros in the third division of Spanish football, there may have been a look of disappointment on his face, given his potential. After all, he was from the same generation of Valencia full backs as José Gayà and Juan Bernat. But context is everything, and the 17-year-old from Albal just south of Valencia could not have known of the challenges that lay ahead.

Loan spells and Valencia Mestalla

The season after making his senior debut saw him join Tenerife on loan in Segunda, however with few opportunities he was recalled in January 2014, and contributed to Valencia Mestalla in the second half of the season. He made the bench for a couple of Valencia’s Europa League games, but the following season saw him return exclusively to the B team with 35 appearances, as they avoided relegation from the third tier.

His first opportunity with another team in La Liga came the following year, as he joined Granada on loan, but again struggled for playing time. He made his debut in August and it looked promising, but he got sent off 55 minutes in, and would make his only other league appearance that season in November. Granada, not convinced by his initial showing, had gone out and signed Italian international Cristiano Biraghi ahead of the deadline, who made the position his own.

The biggest battle

At the end of the summer of 2016, following his season with Granada, Salva started feeling unusually tired in the evening, after afternoon games and training sessions. The unease was heightened when, after a wisdom tooth extraction at the dentist, his gum simply wouldn’t stop bleeding.

Just before going on holiday with his girlfriend, he said enough was enough and went to hospital to undergo tests. The results were serious, and came as a shock - aplastic anemia was something he had never even heard of before.

A condition where the body fails to make enough red blood cells, it hugely increases fatigue, bleeding and risk of infection. Salva was sidelined for almost two years, undergoing treatments, not being allowed to exercise for much of the first part of it. He couldn’t really socialise - the risk of infection was too high - and at one stage the doctor couldn’t even promise he would be able to play again.

“You might get back to a normal life, but not back to football. It might be three months, it might be three years”, the doctor said.

More than just a battle with illness, it was a battle with uncertainty, that lasted until he was slowly able to return with Valencia Mestalla at the very end of 2017.

A double high then another low

In January 2018, Salva seized an opportunity to go on loan to Mallorca, who were fighting for promotion to the second tier at the time. It was perfect timing, as they ended up clinching promotion which gave Salva the perfect opportunity to get back on his feet in the second division.

Salva and the mallorquines went one better that season, gaining promotion again to La Liga, after a 3-2 come back win in the playoffs. This time he made more of a contribution despite some injuries, with 18 starts throughout the campaign.

The following two seasons were much less good, as he made the switch to Depor just as they entered free fall. They were relegated from the second division in his first year, and failed to go back up in his second, in what was the last season of the old Segunda B.

Castellón

Salva joined Castellón the season before the arrival of Bob Voulgaris, and found a team without much direction. They finished 13th in the new Primera RFEF, but on a personal level Salva had his most consistent season since his illness, playing over 2500 minutes and 32 matches. One of Castellón’s best players that season, he proved himself to be a key part of the dressing room, on and off the pitch.

That continued into the Bob Voulgaris era, even though his availability and playing time decreased considerably. A succession of injuries kept him on the sidelines, much as they had done at different points when he was at Mallorca and Depor. He only managed 18 starts in 2022/23, and although he came back stronger when Castellón were promoted to Segunda, the two most recent seasons have been challenging to say the least.

2024/25 and 2025/26 combined saw Salva play fewer minutes than he did in his first season at the club, and despite his contribution off the field, and his performances when he does play, it’s become more difficult in a Castellón team that will punish you fitness wise if your body is not responding.

It would have easy for Salva to stop at almost any point, but he has kept going, and made a big contribution to the albinegros even when on the sidelines. When he has played, his class is still clear to see, but it’s his mindset that really shines through.

Whatever the next step is for Salva, the way he has carried on, in the face of challenge after challenge, has been quite inspirational, and he is certainly an asset to any dressing room that will have him. Whatever comes next Salva, all the best and thank you. PPO!

Salva Ruiz: Fortaleza ante la adversidad

Es el 15 de julio de 2012, y Salva Ruiz está celebrando la victoria en un campo empapado en el A. Le Coq Arena de Tallin. España acaba de ganar el Campeonato de Europa Sub-19 por novena vez, su segundo título consecutivo. Pero para el joven Salva es su primera experiencia de éxito futbolístico, y el chico de 17 años está disfrutando cada minuto, a pesar de haber disputado solo un partido en el torneo. Considerado por entonces uno de los futuros talentos españoles en el puesto de lateral, debutaría con el primer equipo del Valencia unos meses más tarde en la Copa del Rey, antes de cumplir los dieciocho años.

El Castellón, por el contrario, se encontraba en lo más bajo en aquel momento. Había terminado noveno en la cuarta división, con una deducción de tres puntos por no presentarse a uno de los partidos.

A decir verdad, si te hubieras acercado al joven Salva en Estonia y le hubieras dicho que, en diez años, estaría jugando con los albinegros en la tercera división del fútbol español, quizá se le habría notado cierta decepción en el rostro, dado su potencial. Al fin y al cabo, pertenecía a la misma generación de laterales del Valencia que José Gayà y Juan Bernat. Pero el contexto lo es todo, y aquel joven de 17 años de Albal, al sur de Valencia, no podía saber los retos que le esperaban.

Cesiones y el Valencia Mestalla

La temporada siguiente a su debut con el primer equipo la pasó cedido en el Tenerife, en Segunda División; sin embargo, al tener pocas oportunidades, fue llamado de vuelta en enero de 2014 y contribuyó al Valencia Mestalla en la segunda mitad de la temporada. Formó parte del banquillo en un par de partidos del Valencia en la Europa League, pero la temporada siguiente volvió exclusivamente al equipo B, con el que disputó 35 partidos y ayudó a evitar el descenso de la tercera división.

Su primera oportunidad en otro equipo de La Liga llegó al año siguiente, cuando se incorporó al Granada en calidad de cedido, pero volvió a tener dificultades para conseguir minutos de juego. Debutó en agosto y su actuación parecía prometedora, pero fue expulsado a los 55 minutos, y su única otra aparición en liga esa temporada tendría lugar en noviembre. El Granada, poco convencido por su actuación inicial, había fichado al internacional italiano Cristiano Biraghi justo antes del cierre del mercado, quien se hizo con el puesto.

La lucha más importante

A finales del verano de 2016, tras su temporada con el Granada, Salva empezó a sentir un cansancio inusual por las tardes, después de los partidos y los entrenamientos de la tarde. La inquietud se agravó cuando, tras la extracción de una muela del juicio en el dentista, la encía no dejaba de sangrar.

Justo antes de irse de vacaciones con su novia, decidió que ya era suficiente y acudió al hospital para hacerse unas pruebas. Los resultados fueron graves y supusieron un shock: una aplasia medular era algo de lo que nunca había oído hablar antes.

Se trata de una enfermedad en la que el cuerpo no produce suficientes glóbulos rojos, lo que aumenta enormemente el cansancio, las hemorragias y el riesgo de infección. Salva estuvo apartado de los terrenos de juego durante casi dos años, sometiéndose a tratamientos y sin poder hacer ejercicio durante gran parte de ese tiempo. No podía socializar —el riesgo de infección era demasiado alto— y, en un momento dado, el médico ni siquiera pudo prometerle que pudiera volver a jugar.

«Puede que vuelvas a una vida normal, pero no al fútbol. Puede que sean tres meses, puede que sean tres años», le dijo el médico.

Más que una simple lucha contra la enfermedad, fue una batalla contra la incertidumbre, que se prolongó hasta que, poco a poco, pudo reincorporarse al Valencia Mestalla a finales de 2017.

Un doble alto y luego otro bajo

En enero de 2018, Salva aprovechó la oportunidad de marcharse cedido al Mallorca, que por entonces luchaba por el ascenso a la segunda división. Fue el momento perfecto, ya que el equipo acabó logrando el ascenso, lo que le brindó a Salva la oportunidad ideal para volver a ponerse en marcha en la segunda división.

Salva y los mallorquines dieron un paso más esa temporada, consiguiendo de nuevo el ascenso a La Liga tras una remontada que les dio la victoria por 3-2 en los play-offs. Esta vez aportó más al equipo, a pesar de algunas lesiones, con 18 partidos como titular a lo largo de la campaña.

Las dos temporadas siguientes fueron mucho menos satisfactorias, ya que fichó por el Depor justo cuando el equipo entraba en caída libre. Descendieron de la Segunda División en su primer año y no lograron volver a ascender en el segundo, en la que fue la última temporada de la antigua Segunda B.

Castellón

Salva fichó por el Castellón la temporada anterior a la llegada de Bob Voulgaris y se encontró con un equipo sin rumbo claro. El equipo terminó en 13.ª posición en la nueva Primera RFEF, pero, a nivel personal, Salva cuajó su temporada más regular desde que superó su enfermedad, disputando más de 2.500 minutos y 32 partidos. Fue uno de los mejores jugadores del Castellón aquella temporada y demostró ser una pieza clave en el vestuario, tanto dentro como fuera del campo.

Esto continuó en la era de Bob Voulgaris, aunque su disponibilidad y sus minutos de juego disminuyeron considerablemente. Una sucesión de lesiones lo mantuvo al margen, al igual que le había ocurrido en diferentes momentos durante su etapa en el Mallorca y en el Depor. Solo logró 18 titularidades en la temporada 2022/23 y, aunque regresó más fuerte cuando el Castellón ascendió a Segunda, las dos últimas temporadas han sido, como mínimo, complicadas.

En las temporadas 2024/25 y 2025/26 juntas, Salva disputó menos minutos que en su primera temporada en el club y, a pesar de su aportación fuera del terreno de juego y de sus actuaciones cuando juega, se le ha hecho más difícil encajar en un equipo del Castellón que te castiga físicamente si tu cuerpo no responde.

A Salva le habría resultado fácil dejarlo en casi cualquier momento, pero ha seguido adelante y ha aportado mucho a los albinegros incluso desde el banquillo. Cuando ha jugado, su clase sigue siendo evidente, pero es su mentalidad lo que realmente destaca.

Sea cual sea el próximo paso de Salva, la forma en que ha seguido adelante, enfrentándose a un reto tras otro, ha sido toda una inspiración, y sin duda es un activo para cualquier vestuario que lo acoja. Pase lo que pase a partir de ahora, Salva, te deseamos lo mejor y gracias. ¡PPO!

Castellón’s successful season has naturally attracted suitors for its top players, even this early in the transfer window. Cala is rumoured to have a €5 million release clause which at least Espanyol are planning to trigger, while Brian Cipenga’s contract is expiring and no extension has been confirmed.

If those both Cala and Cipenga’s exits are made official, Castellón will be left with some significant holes to fill in their default starting XI from last year. While potentially not direct replacements, two names have appeared prominently in reports in the last week, Álvaro Martin formerly of Andorra, and Antonio Gala of Campobasso in Serie C.

Martin seems to be the closest to being done, with the Real Madrid canterano a free agent after his contract with Andorra expired. A technical and versatile midfielder, Álvaro has played both through the middle and on the wing during his career, with a preference for the former. The trend with Castellón’s wingers has always been players who cut inside, and Martin fits the bill perfectly, as a left footer playing often playing on the right.

The 25-year-old featured less often this year, with only 21 appearances, but played every game as the team won promotion from Primera RFEF the year before.

Antonio Gala is another player who came through the ranks of a major European team, with the 22-year-old central midfielder a graduate of the AC Milan youth setup. The Italian featured 40 times for Campobasso in Serie C in 25/26, scoring 7 goals and giving 10 assists.

As Italian journalist Nicolo Schira highlights below, Gala has a number of suitors from abroad, including Portuguese Cup winners Torreense and Casa Pia, another data driven club. Last year, he also correctly announced the arrival of Ronaldo Pompeu, which leads me to believe that there is some substance behind this.

The Italian second and third tiers have been a popular target for Castellón in the last few windows, with Fabrizio Brignani, Tommaso De Nipoti (Atalanta B), Ronaldo Pompeu and Kenneth Mamah all having spent time there in the seasons before they joined the albinegros.

Álvaro Martín, Antonio Gala: Un primer repaso a los rumores que circulan en Castellón

La exitosa temporada del Castellón ha atraído, como es lógico, a varios clubes interesados en sus mejores jugadores, incluso en esta fase tan temprana del mercado de fichajes. Se rumorea que Cala tiene una cláusula de rescisión de 5 millones de euros que, al menos, el Espanyol tiene intención de activar, mientras que el contrato de Brian Cipenga está a punto de expirar y aún no se ha confirmado ninguna renovación.

Si se hacen oficiales las salidas tanto de Cala como de Cipenga, el Castellón se quedará con algunos huecos importantes que cubrir en su once titular habitual del año pasado. Aunque quizá no sean sustitutos directos, dos nombres han aparecido con frecuencia en las noticias de la última semana: Álvaro Martín, exjugador del Andorra, y Antonio Gala, del Campobasso de la Serie C.

Martín parece ser el que está más cerca de cerrar su fichaje, ya que el canterano del Real Madrid es agente libre tras la expiración de su contrato con el Andorra. Álvaro, un centrocampista técnico y versátil, ha jugado tanto por el centro como por la banda a lo largo de su carrera, aunque con preferencia por la primera opción. La tendencia entre los extremos del Castellón siempre ha sido la de jugadores que se internan hacia el centro, y Martín encaja a la perfección en ese perfil, ya que es zurdo y suele jugar por la derecha.

El jugador de 25 años ha tenido menos minutos este año, con solo 21 partidos disputados, pero jugó todos los encuentros cuando el equipo logró el ascenso desde la Primera RFEF el año anterior.

Antonio Gala es otro jugador que se ha formado en las categorías inferiores de un gran equipo europeo: este centrocampista de 22 años se formó en la cantera del AC Milan. El italiano disputó 40 partidos con el Campobasso en la Serie C durante la temporada 25/26, en los que marcó 7 goles y dio 10 asistencias.

Como destaca a continuación el periodista italiano Nicolo Schira, Gala cuenta con varios pretendientes en el extranjero, entre ellos el Torreense, ganador de la Copa de Portugal, y el Casa Pia, otro club que se basa en el análisis de datos. El año pasado, Schira también anunció acertadamente la llegada de Ronaldo Pompeu, lo que me lleva a creer que hay algo de fondo en esta información.

Las divisiones italianas de segunda y tercera categoría han sido un punto de atracción para el Castellón en las últimas ventanas de fichajes, ya que Fabrizio Brignani, Tommaso De Nipoti (Atalanta B), Ronaldo Pompeu y Kenneth Mamah jugaron allí durante las temporadas anteriores a su incorporación a los albinegros.

With the pain of the last minute loss to Almeria still relatively fresh in the mind, it’s time to look back on the season as a whole, and what a fantastic one it was. After a rocky start, with only two points from the first five games, Pablo Hernández took over and took the team to the very top of the league after matchday 26, playing an attractive yet solid style of football that gained admirers worldwide.

This season’s Castellón were first in xG, first in set piece goal differential, and a whole host of other offensive metrics (as seen in the graphic below produced by @CDCastellon360 on X). However those were the “should have happened” metrics, not the “did happen” ones. Indeed, the one stat that perhaps mostly accurately tells the story of the season in actual goals - expected goals, and there Castellón were 15th. The albinegros were a team that did all the difficult stuff well, but couldn’t find the final touch to match their league best offensive data.

There will be more time and posts to reflect and analyse, however as we have done in the last few seasons, it’s now time to announce the Pam Pam Football Awards for 25/26. This season I announced eight categories, which are as follows:

MVP: Álex Calatrava

Honorable mentions: Diego Barri, Alberto Jimenez, Brian Cipenga

While I would seriously make the case for Diego Barri as well (more on that later), it is undeniable that this season Álex Calatrava confirmed his status as the team’s star and top performer, with 14 goals and 8 assists. The former Atlético youth player, signed in 2024, has gone from strength to strength to become one of Segunda’s most prized players, and someone that almost every club in Spain (not just Segunda) would welcome in their ranks.

Every team dreams of having that player who can create something out of nothing. A player who doesn’t really need much help to create danger and opportunities, and unlocks games at the most critical moments. Cala is that and then some.

Perhaps the perfect illustration of that was his equaliser against Almeria last week, where he received the ball on the edge of the area, beat two players, and from an almost impossible angle on byline was able to catch out Andrés Fernandez and squeeze the ball in.

How could one also forget his perfect hat-trick in the 2-3 win away at Málaga, including a beautiful and unorthodox backwards header from the edge of the area. Or his 25 yard screamer from out of nowhere in the 2-0 win against Depor at Castalia, surely one of the goals of the season.

The list of his brilliances is too long for one article, and while Castellón fans will certainly hope he stays forever, the reality is that his release clause will most likely be too tempting for a whole host of La Liga teams to pass up this summer. He is a huge part of the reason this season was so unforgettable for the albingeros, and a player who I fully expect to see playing at European level and beyond in the next few seasons.

Breakout star: Brian Cipenga/Ousmane Camara

Honourable mentions: Beñat Gerenabarrena

OK, I’m cheating already. But I really couldn’t choose between these two, as they both perfectly embody the definition of “breakout”.

Brian Cipenga’s first season last year was probably one of slightly frustration and lack of opportunities. The Congolose winger, currently with his country at the World Cup, was limited to 15 appearances and only 7 starts in 2024-25. However he developed strongly over the summer, and after being the standout performer in preseason, he carried that form straight over into La Liga 2, with three goals in the first six matches.

Cipenga’s raw pace and athletic ability made him incredibly difficult to defend in one on one situations, and he really came into his own not just as a goal threat but above all as a provider of assists. He led the team with 9 this campaign, and was a perfect pair with Cala often playing on the other wing.

Ousmane Camara’s story is somewhat similar. Signed in August 2024, he only made his debut in December of that year due to persistent injuries, and managed 3 goals in 16 appearances. However with a full preseason under his belt, this year he established himself as Castellón’s main threat at striker, with 12 goals in 27 starts and three assists.

However those numbers only tell half the story. What really sets Camara apart is his defensive work rate, a crucial part of Castellón’s style of play. The Guinean was effectively the first line of defense, constantly harassing opposition defenders inside their own half. With 49 recoveries and 57 defensive contributions per FotMob, he was one of the top defensive strikers in the league and the first stage of Castellón’s play without the ball.

An honourable mention for this category must also go to Beñat Gerenabarrena, signed on loan from Athletic. A mainstay in the midfield alongside Diego Barri, he was cut from the same cloth as Thomas Van den Belt and Giorgi Kochorashvili, who were also signed on loan in previous seasons from Feyenoord and Levante respectively. Full of energy, box-to-box, Beñat will almost certainly feature extensively for Athletic in La Liga next year under the stewardship of Edin Terzic.

Best signing: Jeremy Mellot

Honourable mentions: Fabrizio Brignani, Diego Barri

While Mellot would also be a worthy winner of the best defender category, he takes the best signing award after his arrival on a free transfer in the summer, after starring for Tenerife in Segunda the year before.

Consistency. That would be the one word that sums up Mellot, who played every single minute for Castellón at right back until he was sent off against Racing on matchday 28. Incredibly reliable, and above all a big defensive presence at a position that Castellón had opted for more offense in the past with Daijiro Chirino.

As the team switched to four at the back under Pablo Hernández, his importance was magnified further, and the albinegros were simply not as good defensively without him on the pitch.

Although his season finished in less than ideal circumstances, with three red cards in six games and then a serious hamstring injury against Cádiz, which ruled him out of the playoff, he will almost certainly come back next year and continue his form at right back in a black and white shirt.

Best defender: Alberto Jiménez/Fabrizio Brignani

Again, I’m having to give two awards here. Alberto and Brignani are such different players, and their contributions to the team are so distinct, but in my opinion equally valuable.

Starting with the man who has been with the team since Primera RFEF, and ever-present not just on the pitch, but as one of the leading voices in the dressing room and providing leadership that has been so important to the team.

With Salva Ruiz not featuring much due to injury and form, Alberto took on the captaincy and more than lived up to the role. The Canarian was once again the basis of the Castellón defense, either as the central defender of the back three or alongside Brignani/Sienra in a back four.

On a personal note, his highlight of the season was probably his beautiful solo goal against Andorra, which even the best strikers would have been proud of. Making a run up from defense, he beat two Andorra defenders, and cut inside to power the ball past the keeper.

Fabrizio Brignani came in with a lot of pressure on his shoulders, with a €1 million price tag, at the time Castellón’s most expensive signing. However it became clear as the season progressed exactly why he was signed - he is the centerpiece of Castellón’s set-piece strategy. From centre-back, Brignani was the team’s third highest scorer, only behind Cala and Camara, and has an ability to be in the right place at the right time on set pieces that I have basically never seen from any other player in all my years watching football.

It’s not just the headed goals which Brignani is a master of. It’s his ability to finish from inside the box generally, that is comparable to many top strikers in the division. Against Huesca, Ronaldo Pompeu floated in a free kick from near the center circle, and the way Brignani tracked the ball, and positioned himself perfectly so it would drop onto his foot for a beautiful volley was something to behold.

The Italian has been generally OK defensively, but it is what he brings offensively that makes the €1 million price tag now look like extremely good business for a unicorn player.

Best midfielder: Diego Barri

Honourable mention: Beñat Gerenabarrena

Vicente del Bosque once said that if you watch the game you don’t see Busquets, but if you watch Busquets you see the game. While Barri is clearly no Busquets, del Bosque’s quote could largely be applied to him at the heart of Castellón’s midfield.

The man signed from Cultural Leonesa in the summer was the fulcrum of the team this season, with 1,967 touches, 89 tackles and 189 recoveries (per FotMob), placing him amongst the top midfielders in the league in each of those categories.

The Salmantino only missed three games, against Córdoba, Eibar and Las Palmas, but Castellón failed to win all of them, and lost to Córdoba at home.

He worked fantastically with Gere in what was the most common central midfield partnership chosen by Pablo Hernández, with the Basque playing the high energy, terrier kind of role and Barri there as the ever-present option to recycle possession and move forward.

Off the pitch, he also established himself as the one of the leaders in the dressing room alongside Alberto, and coined the “Y si, si?” [“and what if, yes?] phrase that became a motto for the entire city in the final weeks of the season, symbolising the dare to dream mentality the club has had all year.

Best forward/winger: Álex Calatrava

Honourable mention: Ousmane Camara

Not much needs to be added that hasn’t already been said. Castellón’s manager and legend Pablo Hernández is known as El Mago, but Cala has made that nickname his own as a one man source of creative inspiration for Castellón’s attack.

Camara is also in the conversation here, as mentioned, not just for his offensive prowess, but also his defensive abilities. Nothing could more perfectly represent this Castellón side more than the defender of the year winning for his offensive ability, and Camara being in contention for the best forward award partially for his defensive prowess.

Goal of the season: Brian Cipenga vs Valladolid

Honourable mention: Alberto vs Andorra, Cala (take your pick)

There were many great goals in the albinegros’ campaign, but none better than Cipenga’s curling effort from the edge of the area against Valladolid. “There are kids watching!” the Spanish commentator exclaimed as if to give a parental advisory.

Alberto’s solo effort against Andorra is also worthy of consideration, but Cipenga’s effort takes some beating.

Match of the season: vs Deportivo (A, 1-3)

Honourable mention: Real Valladolid (A, 0-4)

A number of contenders, but the away win at Depor in December stands out for a few reasons. Firstly, it was a huge statement against a team that Castellón have some history against. Depor were joint leaders at the time, and the manner in which the victory was achieved was a big statement for what was to come, with the albingeros eventually climbing to the top of the league 9 matches later.

Secondly, Brignani scored his first goal for the club, from a beautifully executed set piece, that really illustrated what was a huge part of their season.

Last but not least, almost a year to the day of that match, Deportivo had run riot at Riazor 5-1 against the albinegros. Going there and winning in the way they did was a huge reflection on the progress made, and perhaps also a change in mentality.

Con el dolor de la derrota en el último minuto ante el Almería aún relativamente fresco en la memoria, es hora de echar la vista atrás y repasar la temporada en su conjunto, y qué temporada tan fantástica ha sido. Tras un comienzo complicado, con solo dos puntos en los cinco primeros partidos, Pablo Hernández tomó las riendas y llevó al equipo a lo más alto de la clasificación tras la jornada 26, con un estilo de fútbol atractivo pero sólido que se ganó admiradores en todo el mundo.

El Castellón de esta temporada fue primero en xG, primero en diferencia de goles a balón parado y en toda una serie de otras métricas ofensivas (como se ve en el gráfico de abajo elaborado por @CDCastellon360 en X). Sin embargo, esas eran las métricas de lo que «debería haber pasado», no las de lo que «pasó». De hecho, la estadística que quizá refleje con mayor precisión la historia de la temporada en términos de goles reales —los goles esperados— sitúa al Castellón en el puesto 15. Los albinegros fueron un equipo que hizo bien todo lo difícil, pero que no supo dar el toque final para estar a la altura de sus excelentes datos ofensivos en la liga.

Habrá más tiempo y más artículos para reflexionar y analizar, pero, tal y como hemos hecho en las últimas temporadas, ha llegado el momento de anunciar los Premios Pam Pam de Fútbol de la temporada 25/26. Esta temporada he anunciado ocho categorías, que son las siguientes:

MVP: Álex Calatrava

Notable: Diego Barri, Alberto Jimenez, Brian Cipenga

Aunque yo también defendería con firmeza la candidatura de Diego Barri (hablaré de ello más adelante), es innegable que esta temporada Álex Calatrava ha consolidado su estatus como estrella y mejor jugador del equipo, con 14 goles y 8 asistencias. El exjugador de la cantera del Atlético, fichado en 2024, ha ido ganando fuerza hasta convertirse en uno de los jugadores más cotizados de la Segunda División, y en alguien a quien casi todos los clubes de España (no solo de la Segunda) acogerían con los brazos abiertos en sus filas.

Todos los equipos sueñan con tener a ese jugador capaz de crear algo de la nada. Un jugador que realmente no necesita mucha ayuda para generar peligro y ocasiones, y que desbloquea los partidos en los momentos más críticos. Cala es eso y mucho más.

Quizá el ejemplo perfecto de ello fue su gol del empate contra el Almería la semana pasada, cuando recibió el balón en el borde del área, se deshizo de dos rivales y, desde un ángulo casi imposible junto a la línea de fondo, fue capaz de sorprender a Andrés Fernández y meter el balón en la portería.

¿Cómo olvidar tampoco su perfecto hat-trick en la victoria por 2-3 a domicilio ante el Málaga, que incluyó un precioso y poco ortodoxo cabezazo hacia atrás desde el borde del área? O su trallazo desde 25 metros salido de la nada en la victoria por 2-0 contra el Depor en Castalia, sin duda uno de los goles de la temporada.

La lista de sus momentos de brillantez es demasiado larga para un solo artículo y, aunque los aficionados del Castellón sin duda esperarán que se quede para siempre, la realidad es que su cláusula de rescisión probablemente resultará demasiado tentadora como para que muchos equipos de La Liga la dejen pasar este verano. Él es una de las principales razones por las que esta temporada ha sido tan inolvidable para los albingeros, y es un jugador al que estoy convencido de que veremos compitiendo a nivel europeo y más allá en las próximas temporadas.

Revelación: Brian Cipenga/Ousmane Camara

Notable: Beñat Gerenabarrena

Vale, ya estoy haciendo trampa. Pero es que realmente no podía elegir entre estos dos, ya que ambos encarnan a la perfección la definición de «revelación».

La primera temporada de Brian Cipenga el año pasado fue probablemente un poco frustrante y con pocas oportunidades. El extremo congoleño, que actualmente se encuentra con su selección en el Mundial, se vio limitado a 15 partidos y solo 7 como titular en la temporada 2024-25. Sin embargo, progresó mucho durante el verano y, tras destacar en la pretemporada, mantuvo ese buen nivel en La Liga 2, con tres goles en los seis primeros partidos.

La velocidad y la capacidad atlética de Cipenga lo hacían increíblemente difícil de defender en situaciones de uno contra uno, y realmente destacó no solo como amenaza goleadora, sino sobre todo como asistente. Lideró al equipo con 9 en esta campaña y formó una pareja perfecta con Cala, que solía jugar en la otra banda.

La historia de Ousmane Camara es algo similar. Fichado en agosto de 2024, no debutó hasta diciembre de ese año debido a lesiones persistentes, y logró 3 goles en 16 partidos. Sin embargo, tras completar una pretemporada al completo, este año se ha consolidado como la principal amenaza del Castellón en ataque, con 12 goles en 27 partidos como titular y tres asistencias.

No obstante, esas cifras solo cuentan la mitad de la historia. Lo que realmente distingue a Camara es su trabajo defensivo, una parte crucial del estilo de juego del Castellón. El guineano fue, en la práctica, la primera línea de defensa, presionando constantemente a los defensas rivales en su propio campo. Con 49 recuperaciones y 57 contribuciones defensivas según FotMob, fue uno de los delanteros más sólidos en defensa de la liga y una pieza clave en la fase de juego sin balón del Castellón.

En esta categoría también merece una mención especial Beñat Gerenabarrena, cedido por el Athletic. Pilar fundamental en el centro del campo junto a Diego Barri, estaba hecho del mismo molde que Thomas Van den Belt y Giorgi Kochorashvili, que también llegaron cedidos en temporadas anteriores procedentes del Feyenoord y el Levante, respectivamente. Lleno de energía y con un estilo de juego de área a área, es casi seguro que Beñat tendrá un papel destacado en el Athletic de la próxima temporada de La Liga bajo la dirección de Edin Terzic.

Best signing: Jeremy Mellot

Notable: Fabrizio Brignani, Diego Barri

Aunque Mellot también merecería el premio al mejor defensa, se lleva el galardón al mejor fichaje tras su llegada como agente libre este verano, después de haber destacado con el Tenerife en Segunda el año anterior.

Constancia. Esa sería la palabra que resume a Mellot, que jugó todos y cada uno de los minutos con el Castellón como lateral derecho hasta que fue expulsado contra el Racing en la jornada 28. Increíblemente fiable y, sobre todo, una gran presencia defensiva en una posición en la que el Castellón había apostado por más ataque en el pasado con Daijiro Chirino.

Cuando el equipo pasó a jugar con cuatro defensas bajo las órdenes de Pablo Hernández, su importancia se magnificó aún más, y los albinegros simplemente no eran tan buenos defensivamente sin él sobre el terreno de juego.

Aunque su temporada terminó en circunstancias poco ideales, con tres tarjetas rojas en seis partidos y luego una grave lesión en los isquiotibiales contra el Cádiz, que le dejó fuera de los play-offs, es casi seguro que volverá el año que viene y continuará su racha como lateral derecho con la camiseta albinegra.

Mejor defensa: Alberto Jiménez/Fabrizio Brignani

Una vez más, me veo obligado a otorgar dos premios. Alberto y Brignani son jugadores muy diferentes, y sus aportaciones al equipo son muy distintas, pero, en mi opinión, igualmente valiosas.

Empezando por el hombre que lleva en el equipo desde la Primera RFEF y que siempre ha estado presente, no solo sobre el terreno de juego, sino también como una de las voces más influyentes en el vestuario, aportando un liderazgo que ha sido tan importante para el equipo.

Con Salva Ruiz sin jugar mucho debido a las lesiones y a su estado de forma, Alberto asumió la capitanía y estuvo más que a la altura del papel. El canario fue una vez más la base de la defensa del Castellón, ya fuera como central en la zaga de tres o junto a Brignani/Sienra en una zaga de cuatro.

A nivel personal, lo más destacado de su temporada fue probablemente su precioso gol en solitario contra Andorra, del que incluso los mejores delanteros se habrían sentido orgullosos. Tras una carrera desde la defensa, regateó a dos defensas andorranos y se internó hacia dentro para batir al portero con un potente disparo.

Fabrizio Brignani llegó con mucha presión sobre sus hombros, con un precio de 1 millón de euros, en aquel momento el fichaje más caro del Castellón. Sin embargo, a medida que avanzaba la temporada quedó claro exactamente por qué se le había fichado: es la pieza clave de la estrategia a balón parado del Castellón. Desde su posición de central, Brignani fue el tercer máximo goleador del equipo, solo por detrás de Cala y Camara, y tiene una capacidad para estar en el lugar adecuado en el momento adecuado en las jugadas a balón parado que, básicamente, nunca he visto en ningún otro jugador en todos mis años viendo fútbol.

Brignani no solo destaca por sus goles de cabeza. Es su capacidad para rematar desde dentro del área, en general, lo que le sitúa a la altura de muchos de los mejores delanteros de la liga. Contra el Huesca, Ronaldo Pompeu lanzó un tiro libre desde cerca del círculo central, y la forma en que Brignani siguió la trayectoria del balón y se colocó a la perfección para que le cayera en el pie y rematar de volea fue algo digno de ver.

El italiano se ha mostrado en general correcto en defensa, pero es lo que aporta en ataque lo que hace que su precio de 1 millón de euros parezca ahora un negocio excelente por un jugador único.

Mejor mediocentro: Diego Barri

Notable: Beñat Gerenabarrena

Vicente del Bosque dijo una vez que, si ves el partido, no ves a Busquets, pero si ves a Busquets, ves el partido. Aunque está claro que Barri no es Busquets, la cita de Del Bosque podría aplicarse en gran medida a él, desde el centro del campo del Castellón.

El jugador, fichado del Cultural Leonesa en verano, fue el eje del equipo esta temporada, con 1.967 toques, 89 entradas y 189 recuperaciones (según FotMob), lo que le sitúa entre los mejores centrocampistas de la liga en cada una de esas categorías.

El salmantino solo se perdió tres partidos, contra el Córdoba, el Eibar y Las Palmas, pero el Castellón no logró ganar ninguno de ellos y cayó derrotado ante el Córdoba en casa.

Formó una pareja fantástica con Gere en la combinación de mediocampistas centrales más habitual elegida por Pablo Hernández, con el vasco desempeñando un papel de gran energía, al estilo de un terrier, y Barri como la opción siempre presente para reciclar la posesión y avanzar.

Fuera del campo, también se consolidó como uno de los líderes en el vestuario junto a Alberto, y acuñó la frase «Y si, si?», que se convirtió en el lema de toda la ciudad en las últimas semanas de la temporada, simbolizando la mentalidad de atreverse a soñar que el club ha tenido durante todo el año.

Mejor delantero/extremo: Álex Calatrava

Notable: Ousmane Camara

No hay mucho más que añadir a lo que ya se ha dicho. El entrenador y leyenda del Castellón, Pablo Hernández, es conocido como «El Mago», pero Cala se ha ganado ese apodo por sí mismo, al ser una fuente inagotable de inspiración creativa para el ataque del Castellón.

Camara también entra en esta conversación, como se ha mencionado, no solo por su destreza ofensiva, sino también por sus habilidades defensivas. Nada podría representar mejor a este Castellón que el hecho de que el defensa del año ganara el premio por su capacidad ofensiva y que Camara optara al premio al mejor delantero, en parte, por su destreza defensiva.

Gol de la temporada: Brian Cipenga vs Valladolid

Notable: Alberto vs Andorra, Cala (el que quieras!)

Hubo muchos goles magníficos a lo largo de la temporada de los albinegros, pero ninguno mejor que el disparo con efecto de Cipenga desde el borde del área contra el Valladolid. «¡Hay niños mirando!», exclamó el comentarista español, como si quisiera advertir a los padres.

La jugada individual de Alberto contra Andorra también merece ser mencionada, pero el gol de Cipenga es difícil de superar.

Mejor partido: vs Deportivo (F, 1-3)

Honourable mention: Real Valladolid (F, 0-4)

Hubo varios partidos destacados, pero la victoria fuera de casa ante el Depor en diciembre destaca por varias razones. En primer lugar, fue toda una declaración de intenciones frente a un equipo con el que el Castellón tiene cierta historia. El Depor era colíder en ese momento, y la forma en que se logró la victoria fue un claro indicio de lo que estaba por venir, ya que los albingeros acabaron aupándose a lo más alto de la clasificación nueve jornadas después.

En segundo lugar, Brignani marcó su primer gol con el club, a partir de una jugada a balón parado magníficamente ejecutada, que realmente ilustró lo que fue una parte fundamental de la temporada.

Por último, pero no menos importante, justo un año antes de ese partido, el Deportivo había arrollado en Riazor por 5-1 a los albinegros. Ir allí y ganar de la forma en que lo hicieron fue un gran reflejo del progreso realizado y, quizás, también de un cambio de mentalidad.

In June last year, Real Oviedo’s Francisco Portillo scored in the 103rd minute of extra time and sent his team to La Liga, ending Mirandés’s top-flight dreams. It was a heartbreaking end to the greatest season in the club’s history, and one of the most unlikely near-promotion stories ever. This was a team made up almost entirely of loanees, and only a handful of permanent players. And even those were on expiring contracts.

The glue was Alessio Lisci, an Italian who made his name coaching various Spanish youth teams, before being put in interim charge of Levante in La Liga at the end of 2021, having managed their Juvenil B side. He did well, but not well enough to earn him the role on a permanent basis and ended up in his first permanent coaching role at Mirandés a year later. 2023-24 was typical Mirandés – a relegation battle which they narrowly survived. 2024-25 was the season nobody saw coming.

Sometimes in football, circumstances come together randomly to create success out of nowhere. Serendipity at its finest. Lisci, a talented young coach getting his first full time opportunity, a group of loanees that turned out to be extremely talented, and a season where the top teams were all relatively closely matched (only 10 points separated 1st from 6th). Some of the names that played for Mirandés last year: Joaquin Panichelli (16 goals in Ligue 1 this season for Strasbourg), Jon Gorrotxategi (26 starts for Real Sociedad in La Liga this season) and Urko Itzeta (13 appearances for Athletic this campaign).

When the final whistle went on that fateful night at the Carlos Tartiere, it wasn’t just heartbreaking because of the manner in which they lost – at one point they were leading the tie 2-0 on aggregate, only for Oviedo to come back. It was heartbreaking because there was a feeling, and a very fair one, that they might never get back there again.

Lisci was announced as the new Osasuna manager shortly afterwards, and all those players who built that season said farewell. The result, this year, is clear to see. A team firmly in the relegation battle, and that will in fact be relegated to Primera RFEF if they fail to beat Leganés in the last game of the season. 45 minutes from La Liga to the third tier in one season.

Why am I talking about Mirandés, you ask? Very simple. It’s because there are some Castellón fans who see the consequence of losing to Eibar on Sunday in the last game of the season as similar. The albinegros, simply by reaching the last game of the season with their playoff fate in their hands, have done fantastically, regardless of what happens next.

This is a team that after five games was in the relegation zone with two points, and under Pablo Hernandez have managed to turn it around, even climbing to the very top of the table after matchday 26.

Diego Barri, a summer signing from Cultural Leonesa, has emerged as one the leaders in the team, and the originator of this season’s motto “Y si, si?” [“and what if, yes?]. It symbolizes the right to dream, for a club that until Bob Voulgaris took over in 2022, only had a right to worry. The town has taken this to the next level – a banner with the catchphrase now adorns the iconic El Fadri tower in the centre of Castellón.

However, I will push back on something Barri said during his dressing room team talk ahead of the crucial 1-0 win away to Huesca, which has left Castellón with everything still in their hands. Thinking about his own spell at Albacete in 2018, where he saw the club narrowly miss out on promotion, before narrowly staying up the following season, he was motivating through caution. “It’s an opportunity that might not come again” he said.

Words are shaped by experience, but Barri should realise this is something different to Albacete in 2019, and different to Mirandés in 2025. There is a real project here, measured over multiple seasons, not just one. A belief from Bob Voulgaris of total inevitability that promotion will be achieved, whether now or later.It’s hard for a fanbase like Castellón’s to banish demons from the past. It’s had enough owners who ran away, stole money from the club, and went back on their word. However if Bob Voulgaris has bought anything with the results since 2022, it’s hopefully something money alone can’t buy – trust from the fanbase. With that in mind, let’s take a step back.

Facing Eibar, even at Castalia will be a tough match, like every game in this division. However, Brian Cipenga will feature, after a deal was reached with the DR Congo FA to delay his incorporation into the World Cup camp. And above all, absolutely anything could happen, with 3rd even still a possibility.

All successful bettors understand that the outcome cannot be controlled. You can only place a bet where the value is good, and then whatever happens. Let’s adopt the same mentality. We can control that Castalia is a cauldron, a real 12th man. We can’t control what happens on the pitch. We can control our reaction afterwards – if it’s not this year, it’s next year, and if it’s not next year it’s the year after.

And here’s the thing, the process is the fun part. When the promotion party is over, the bus has been parked, things will move back to the stress of results. Will we stay up? We still have the fun to look forward to, the goal not yet reached.

While Mirandés were legitimately at the end of something in Oviedo, Castellón are only at the beginning of something bigger. So in victory or defeat, all you can do is enjoy it.

En junio del año pasado, Francisco Portillo, del Real Oviedo, marcó en el minuto 103 de la prórroga y llevó a su equipo a La Liga, acabando con los sueños de ascenso del Mirandés. Fue un final desgarrador para la mejor temporada de la historia del club y una de las historias de ascenso más inverosímiles de todos los tiempos. Se trataba de un equipo compuesto casi en su totalidad por jugadores cedidos, con solo un puñado de jugadores fijos. E incluso esos tenían los contratos a punto de expirar.

El pegamento del equipo era Alessio Lisci, un italiano que se hizo un nombre entrenando a varios equipos juveniles españoles, antes de que le pusieran al frente del Levante en La Liga a finales de 2021, tras haber dirigido su equipo Juvenil B. Lo hizo bien, pero no lo suficiente como para ganarse el puesto de forma permanente, y acabó en su primer puesto de entrenador permanente en el Mirandés un año después. La temporada 2023-24 fue típica del Mirandés: una lucha por el descenso de la que se salvó por los pelos. La temporada 2024-25 fue la que nadie vio venir.

A veces, en el fútbol, las circunstancias se alinean de forma fortuita para generar un éxito surgido de la nada. La serendipia en su máxima expresión. Lisci, un joven y prometedor entrenador que se estrenaba al frente de un equipo de forma permanente, un grupo de jugadores cedidos que resultaron ser de gran talento, y una temporada en la que los equipos de cabeza estaban muy igualados (solo 10 puntos separaban al primero del sexto). Algunos de los nombres que jugaron en el Mirandés el año pasado: Joaquín Panichelli (16 goles en la Ligue 1 esta temporada con el Estrasburgo), Jon Gorrotxategi (26 titularidades con la Real Sociedad en La Liga esta temporada) y Urko Itzeta (13 partidos con el Athletic esta campaña).

Cuando sonó el pitido final aquella fatídica noche en el Carlos Tartiere, no solo fue desgarrador por la forma en que perdieron —en un momento dado ganaban la eliminatoria por 2-0 en el global, pero el Oviedo remontó—. Fue desgarrador porque había una sensación, muy fundada, de que quizá nunca volverían a llegar hasta allí.

Poco después se anunció a Lisci como nuevo entrenador de Osasuna, y todos aquellos jugadores que construyeron aquella temporada se despidieron. El resultado, este año, es evidente. Un equipo metido de lleno en la lucha por el descenso, y que de hecho descenderá a Primera RFEF si no consigue ganar al Leganés en el último partido de la temporada. De la Liga a la tercera división en 45 minutos en una sola temporada.

¿Por qué hablo del Mirandés, te preguntarás? Muy sencillo. Es porque hay algunos aficionados del Castellón que ven como similar la consecuencia de perder contra el Eibar el domingo, en el último partido de la temporada. Los albinegros, con solo llegar a la última jornada de la temporada con su destino en los play-offs en sus manos, lo han hecho fantásticamente, independientemente de lo que pase a continuación.Este es un equipo que, tras cinco jornadas, se encontraba en la zona de descenso con dos puntos, y que, bajo la dirección de Pablo Hernández, ha logrado darle la vuelta a la situación, llegando incluso a situarse en lo más alto de la tabla tras la jornada 26.

Diego Barri, fichaje veraniego procedente del Cultural Leonesa, se ha erigido como uno de los líderes del equipo y el creador del lema de esta temporada: «Y si, si?». Simboliza el derecho a soñar, para un club que, hasta que Bob Voulgaris tomó las riendas en 2022, solo tenía derecho a preocuparse. La ciudad ha llevado esto al siguiente nivel: una bandera con el eslogan adorna ahora la emblemática torre de El Fadri, en el centro de Castellón.

Sin embargo, voy a rebatir algo que dijo Barri durante su charla en el vestuario antes de la crucial victoria por 1-0 a domicilio ante el Huesca, que ha dejado a Castellón con todo aún en sus manos. Pensando en su propia etapa en el Albacete en 2018, donde vio cómo el club se quedaba a las puertas del ascenso, antes de salvarse por los pelos la temporada siguiente, motivaba con cautela. «Es una oportunidad que quizá no vuelva a presentarse», dijo.

Las palabras se forjan con la experiencia, pero Barri debería darse cuenta de que esto es algo distinto al Albacete de 2019 y al Mirandés de 2025. Aquí hay un proyecto real, que se mide a lo largo de varias temporadas, no solo una. Una convicción por parte de Bob Voulgaris de que el ascenso es totalmente inevitable, ya sea ahora o más adelante.

A una afición como la de Castellón le cuesta mucho desterrar los fantasmas del pasado. Ha tenido suficientes propietarios que huyeron, robaron dinero del club y incumplieron su palabra. Sin embargo, si Bob Voulgaris ha conseguido algo con los resultados desde 2022, esperemos que sea algo que el dinero por sí solo no puede comprar: la confianza de la afición. Teniendo esto en cuenta, demos un paso atrás.

Enfrentarse al Eibar, incluso en Castalia, será un partido difícil, como todos los de esta división. Sin embargo, Brian Cipenga estará disponible, tras llegar a un acuerdo con la Federación de la República Democrática del Congo para retrasar su incorporación a la concentración para el Mundial. Y, sobre todo, puede pasar absolutamente cualquier cosa, ya que incluso el tercer puesto sigue siendo una posibilidad.

Todos los apostadores exitosos saben que el resultado no se puede controlar. Solo puedes hacer una apuesta cuando el valor es bueno, y luego pase lo que pase. Adoptemos la misma mentalidad. Podemos controlar que Castalia sea un caldero, un auténtico duodécimo jugador. No podemos controlar lo que pase en el campo. Podemos controlar nuestra reacción después: si no es este año, será el año que viene, y si no es el año que viene, será el siguiente.

Y aquí está la clave: el proceso es la parte divertida. Cuando termine la fiesta del ascenso, el autobús se haya aparcado, las cosas volverán al estrés de los resultados. Conseguiremos la permanencia? Todavía nos queda la diversión por delante, el objetivo aún por alcanzar.

Mientras que el Mirandés estaba legítimamente al final de algo en Oviedo, el Castellón solo está al principio de algo más grande. Así que, en la victoria o en la derrota, lo único que puedes hacer es disfrutarlo. 🖤🤍

Last night's encounter at La Rosaleda was the main event of the weekend of La Liga 2, a crucial match in the fight for playoff places and beyond. And it didn't disappoint, with five goals, a perfect hat trick, VAR controversy and suspense until the final whistle.

In the end, it was Castellón who got over the line, with Alex Calatrava starring. Castellón's difference maker scored the first albinegro hat-trick since Manu Sánchez back in Primera RFEF almost three years ago, in an outstanding individual performance. However it wasn't just him, and the build up to Castellón's second was the definition of the way owner Bob Voulgaris wants his team to play football, exploiting the space, making the extra pass, and throwing the defence off balance to leave Cala with a comfortable finish in the box. Awer Mabil and Brian Cipenga made it possible, with some perfectly placed passes and reading of the defence.

Things were not plain sailing, and once again, Castellón were plagued by another dubious VAR decision inside the first 15 minutes. After being poorly controlled by Chupete in the penalty area, the ball bounced up and struck Diego Barri on the arm, who couldn't do much to avoid it. The penalty was converted, and Castellón found themselves behind, not for the first time this season because of a VAR penalty.

Cala's first goal ten minutes later got them back on terms, with the former Atletico man played through by a beautiful Cipenga pass, and able to slot the ball past Herrero despite his best efforts.

The beautiful second came early in the second half and was arguably the goal of the night, even though the albinegros' third goal, with 15 minutes left to play, was also quite remarkable.

The team has been the standout side from set pieces in the second division this year, with well-rehearsed routines and players like Brignani starring in the opposition penalty area, especially from corners. Yet this was totally new idea, and something I haven't seen anywhere at any level. With the big threats tightly marked as normal in the box, it was Calatrava, often a set piece taker, who drifted in front of the scrum of players to intercept the ball with a backwards header that drifted beautifully over everyone, including Herrero, to land in the opposite corner of the net.

I'm really curious about the preparation, and the intentionality of this, but using an unmarked and non-threatening player in the box from set pieces like Calatrava for a free long range header is innovation at its finest. The xG of putting a backwards header into the corner from the edge of the penalty area would have to have been quite low, but it's clear that the idea was at least for Cala to head it on into the pack of players, and then come what may. Rody Hoegee, Castellón's set piece coach, has had a big impact alongside Stuart Reid, who I interviewed for this blog, and the albinegros are certainly one the most innovative set piece teams in Europe right now, not just Spain. The creation of second chance opportunities in the box is one of the key concepts.

Málaga did cut the lead in the last ten minutes with a well placed header from Eneko Jauregui, but Castellón held firm, which deserves a lot of credit in a tough environment away from home, and given that in their last away match, the albinegros did squander a 2-0 lead against Mirandés.

The win in Andalucia leaves Castellón snapping at the heels of the direct promotion places, and even with Almeria's win today, they are now only three points behind. Deportivo's draw with Burgos helped their cause, with next match against Córdoba at Castalia next Saturday. As the final five games approach, the Liga Hypertension as it's also known its fully living up to its nickname.

El encuentro de anoche en La Rosaleda fue el plato fuerte de la jornada de la Segunda División, un partido crucial en la lucha por los puestos de play-off y más allá. Y no defraudó, con cinco goles, un hat-trick perfecto, polémica con el VAR y suspense hasta el pitido final.

Al final, fue el Castellón quien se llevó el gato al agua, con Alex Calatrava como protagonista. El jugador decisivo del Castellón marcó el primer hat-trick albinegro desde el de Manu Sánchez en la Primera RFEF hace casi tres años, en una actuación individual sobresaliente. Sin embargo, no fue solo él, y la jugada previa al segundo gol del Castellón fue la definición de cómo el propietario Bob Voulgaris quiere que su equipo juegue al fútbol: aprovechando los espacios, dando el pase extra y desequilibrando a la defensa para dejar a Cala solo ante el portero en el área. El primer gol de Cala, diez minutos más tarde, les permitió empatar el partido: el exjugador del Atlético recibió un magnífico pase de Cipenga y fue capaz de batir a Herrero a pesar de sus esfuerzos.

El precioso segundo gol llegó al principio de la segunda parte y fue posiblemente el gol de la noche, aunque el tercer tanto de los albinegros, a quince minutos del final, también fue bastante notable.

It's been a challenging couple of weeks for Castellón. After a dreamlike winning run that propelled them to the top of the table, they were abruptly brought back down to earth two weeks ago. First by leaders Racing Santander at Castalia, 3-1, and last week by mid-table Real Sociedad B in San Sebastian, 4-2. Seven goals conceded in two games is a far cry from the defensive form the team had showed until that point, with only two goals conceded in 2026 before then. So what now?

Calm, first of all, which was the main ingredient lacking against Racing and Real B. The albingeros, in third, lead a pack of four teams separated by a point, and then Burgos, outside the playoff spots, who are a further two points away. Racing's back to back wins have seen them open up a seven point lead, so the first priority will be catching Almeria, in second, only three points away. Despite the two losses, Castellón are very much in the hunt for direct promotion, as long as they address the shortcomings of the two previous games. And in truth, both Racing, and then Real B inspired by the Racinguistas, did the same thing - press hard from minute one, leave Castellón no time, and shake them up, leading to early goals.

Ironically, it is what Castellón like to do to others, but Racing's game plan worked perfectly, and they put the game to bed in just over half an hour. Real B, without quite the same talent, but a lot of pace, did the same, with two goals in the first seven minutes. They allowed Castellón back twice, but killed the game in the second half with two further goals.

As the albinegros travel to El Molinón this weekend, Sporting will look at the last 180 minutes as a blueprint for what to do. Over to Castellón, then to rip up the plan and put the chaos to bed.

Mellot and Lucas return

Helping with that immensely will be the return of full backs Jeremy Mellot and Lucas Alcázar, to restructure the defence and restore some familiarity. Pablo Hernández was forced to move to a back three in their absence, and that in large part was what exposed the spaces at the back.

Mellot especially has been ever present at right-back, and along with Alberto Jiménez, the real leader of the albinegro defence. Without a like for like replacement, going without him was always going to be difficult.

Pablo's system has been so effective defensively, and that has arguably been built on the solidity of the back four, which is something that no Castellón manager had been able to establish previously. Getting back to a sense of normality, and having support for Fabrizio Brignani, who made a few costly mistakes in the last two encounters, will be invaluable.

A counterintuitive reality

It would be easy to look at the results, and think that Castellon's offensive numbers against Valladolid (0-4 win), Deportivo (2-0 win), and Andorra (2-0) win would be far superior to their losses against Racing and Real B. The reality is far from that however.

According to Ben Griffis's wonderful match reports app, in the Andorra game, Castellón produced 3.27 xG on only 38% possession. The PPDA (passes per defensive action) was similar for both teams, and certainly Castellón did a much better job of recovering the ball high up the pitch, but the fact that Andorra was left to control possession is striking. And you guessed it, the same thing happened in the convincing wins against Deportivo and Valladolid. Possession was essentially 50/50, with similar PPDA numbers, and similar passing numbers too.

Against Racing and Real B, Castellón dominated possession, with comfortably over 60%, and passes in the opposition half (325 to 89 in the Real Sociedad B game). However the result was the chaotic-feeling, out of control match that we witnessed.

Two things are happening. Conceding early in both cases meant Castellón had to chase the game, play higher, and that opened spaces at the back. Against Sporting then, Castellón must at all costs get through the first half an hour without conceding. The team has not dealt very well with going behind (they did come back against Real B, but not without allowing several more chances on the break).

However beyond allowing early goals, Castellón's best performances this season have actually come without a huge dominance of possession. And conversely, when Castellón have dominated possession and played high, those have been the games they lost.

Once again, in those games they often fell behind and had to chase, which would explain the elevated numbers. But it also points to the fact that Castellón allowing the opponent more possession allows them more time to set up defensively, and therefore leave fewer spaces to exploit.

How you chase the equaliser is also important. In the game against Las Palmas, the Canarians scored the opener inside half an hour, but Castellón snatched a point in injury time. While attack is not Las Palmas's strong suit, Castellón stayed disciplined, and gave up a bit more control in exchange for solidity. In the end, that paid off.

Rediscovering that patience and discipline against Sporting in the face of pressing will therefore be key, and trusting that the process will eventually yield results.

La búsqueda del control

Han sido unas semanas complicadas para el Castellón. Tras una racha de victorias de ensueño que lo aupó a lo más alto de la tabla, hace dos semanas volvió bruscamente a la realidad. Primero, a manos del líder, el Racing de Santander, en Castalia (3-1), y la semana pasada ante el Real Sociedad B, un equipo de la zona media de la tabla, en San Sebastián (4-2). Siete goles encajados en dos partidos dista mucho de la solidez defensiva que el equipo había mostrado hasta ese momento, con solo dos goles encajados en 2026 antes de eso. ¿Y ahora qué?

Tranquilidad, ante todo, que fue el principal ingrediente que faltó contra el Racing y el Real B. Los albingueros, terceros, lideran un grupo de cuatro equipos separados por un punto, y luego el Burgos, fuera de los puestos de play-off, que se encuentra a otros dos puntos. Ahora que los albinegros viajan a El Molinón este fin de semana, el Sporting tomará los últimos 180 minutos como modelo a seguir. Le toca a Castellón, entonces, romper el plan y acabar con el caos.

Vuelven Mellot y Lucas

El regreso de los laterales Jeremy Mellot y Lucas Alcázar será de gran ayuda para reestructurar la defensa y recuperar cierta compenetración. Pablo Hernández se vio obligado a pasar a una defensa de tres en su ausencia, y eso fue en gran parte lo que dejó espacios en la zaga.

Mellot, en particular, ha sido un fijo en el lateral derecho y, junto con Alberto Jiménez, el auténtico líder de la defensa albinegra. Sin un sustituto a su altura, prescindir de él siempre iba a ser difícil.

El sistema de Pablo ha sido muy eficaz en defensa, y podría decirse que se ha construido sobre la solidez de la defensa de cuatro, algo que ningún entrenador del Castellón había sido capaz de establecer anteriormente. Recuperar la sensación de normalidad y contar con apoyo para Fabrizio Brignani, que cometió algunos errores costosos en los dos últimos encuentros, será de un valor incalculable.

Una realidad que desafía la intuición

Sería fácil fijarse en los resultados y pensar que las estadísticas ofensivas del Castellón contra el Valladolid (victoria por 0-4), el Deportivo (victoria por 2-0) y el Andorra (victoria por 2-0) serían muy superiores a las de sus derrotas ante el Racing y el Real B. Sin embargo, la realidad dista mucho de eso.

Según la excelente aplicación de análisis de partidos de Ben Griffis, en el partido contra el Andorra, el Castellón generó 3,27 xG con solo un 38 % de posesión. El PPDA (pases por acción defensiva) fue similar para ambos equipos y, sin duda, el Castellón hizo un trabajo mucho mejor recuperando el balón en zonas adelantadas, pero llama la atención el hecho de que se dejara al Andorra controlar la posesión. Y, como habrás adivinado, ocurrió lo mismo en las contundentes victorias contra el Deportivo y el Valladolid. La posesión fue prácticamente al 50 %, con cifras de PPDA similares y también de pases.

Contra el Racing y el Real B, el Castellón dominó la posesión, con un cómodo 60 % o más, y los pases en el campo contrario (325 frente a 89 en el partido contra la Real Sociedad B). Sin embargo, el resultado fue el partido caótico y fuera de control que presenciamos.

Están ocurriendo dos cosas. Encajar goles tempraneros en ambos casos obligó al Castellón a ir a por el partido, a jugar más adelantado, y eso dejó espacios en la zaga. Por lo tanto, contra el Sporting, el Castellón debe, a toda costa, superar la primera media hora sin encajar ningún gol. El equipo no ha sabido gestionar muy bien el ir por detrás en el marcador (aunque remontó contra el Real B, no sin conceder varias ocasiones más al contraataque).

Sin embargo, más allá de encajar goles tempraneros, las mejores actuaciones del Castellón esta temporada se han producido sin un dominio abrumador de la posesión. Y, por el contrario, cuando el Castellón ha dominado la posesión y ha jugado arriba, esos han sido los partidos que ha perdido.

Una vez más, en esos partidos a menudo se vio por detrás en el marcador y tuvo que ir a por el empate, lo que explicaría las elevadas cifras. Pero también apunta al hecho de que, al permitir que el rival tenga más posesión, al Castellón le da más tiempo para organizarse defensivamente y, por lo tanto, dejar menos espacios que explotar.

La forma de ir a por el empate también es importante. En el partido contra el Las Palmas, los canarios marcaron el primer gol en menos de media hora, pero el Castellón se llevó un punto en el tiempo de descuento. Aunque el ataque no es el punto fuerte de Las Palmas, el Castellón se mantuvo disciplinado y cedió un poco más de control a cambio de solidez. Al final, eso dio sus frutos.

While Castellón's offense and goals might be the sexy centerpieces of the team's incredible run, it's actually the defence under Pablo Hernández and set-pieces that have underpinned the performances. This is the first of a series of articles, and here we will look at where the success has come from.

Ahead of the trip to Las Palmas on Saturday night, it is now four wins from the last five for Castellón, including eight consecutive wins at home, after 2-0 triumph over Deportivo La Coruña. When one takes a deeper dive behind the results, the reasons for Castellón's dominance emerge, and beyond the offensive prowess, there are several key differences under Pablo Hernández that are new for Castellón in the Bob Voulgaris era.

Wins-to-nil

The first rather basic indicator is the number of wins-to-nil we have seen since Pablo's appointment. There have been six of them so far, out of 14 total wins in the Hernández era. 43% might not seem like a lot, but compared to the 28% last year, it's a already a noticeable improvement, and the season isn't even close to being finished yet.

Goals scored/conceded relative to other teams

Another eye-opening, and surprising statistic, is that while Castellón does have the third-most goals scored this season, behind Almeria and Racing, it has the joint second-best defence, with only 25 goals conceded. Relatively speaking, Castellón's defence has actually outperformed its offense this year in terms of production, which is completely mindblowing when you consider last season, and the five games before Hernández took over. Last year, Castellón had the third-worst defence in the league, with 63 goals conceded for the season. While Castellón this year are definitely better (1.69 goals per game vs 1.54 last year), the real improvement has been at the other end of the pitch.

Set-pieces

Smart data teams all have set-pieces at the top of their list as far as the top areas to gain an advantage, and Castellón are no different. That said, this has been the season where the results on the pitch have started to match the time and effort put in behind the scenes. Rody Hoegee was hired full time in the summer as the in house set-piece specialist, after the team had worked with a set-piece consultant on a freelance basis last season. On the pitch, players were also brought in specifically with set pieces in mind - midfielder Ronaldo Pompeu, centre-back Fabrizio Brignani and striker Adam Jakobsen being the standout recruits for corners and free kicks.

Castellón lead the league in set-piece goals with 16 so far this year, which is about 0.6 per game, far more than last season's 0.3 (stats from Xavi Sidro's article). Castellón are the also quite comfortably the team that obtains the most corners in the league, thus being able to generate more set-piece opportunities than any other team as well. All of that means than Castellón generate 26% of their goals from set-pieces, higher than normal in Spanish football.

There's been defensive improvement too, with only seven goals conceded from set-pieces, the lowest number in the division.

All the of the above results in a very different Castellón side than the one lead by Dick Schreuder. There are certainly common threads that will never change under Vouglaris - playing attacking football, never settling for draws, the extreme focus on recovering possession after losing it (Castellón leads the league here too). However Hernández's Castellón is more about composure and control, and being adaptable to the opponent's weaknesses. There isn't a set starting XI, and unlike the back three often used last season, there is now a consistent back four, with Mellot on the right and Lucas on the left as traditional full backs. All of which gets more into the "how", which we will cover next time.

Los secretos del éxito de Castellón (Parte 1 - Dónde)

Victorias sin encajar goles

No hay un once inicial fijo y, a diferencia de la defensa de tres que se utilizaba a menudo la temporada pasada, ahora hay una defensa de cuatro constante, con Mellot a la derecha y Lucas a la izquierda como laterales tradicionales. The dream continues. If you told almost any Castellón fan that their team would be topping the table in February after a 0-4 away win to Valladolid, they would have checked the number of cubatas you had drunk. But no. This is very real, and after getting only two points from the first five games, it almost magical. Then again, a man known as El Mago is in charge, so maybe it shouldn't come as such a surprise.

Yesterday's game at the José Zorilla was yet another example of Pablo Hernández's tactical smarts, but also the importance of set pieces in the game of Castellón version 2026. Dutchman Rody Hoegee was brought in in the summer to improve Castellón's results in that area, and the team's improvement has been clear to see. Three of the four goals yesterday came from set pieces, helped by some poor defending from Valladolid.

The first came after a failed clearance from a corner, with Ousmane Camara left wide open in the area to place a shot past the keeper, after a smart pass from Beñat Gerenabarrena. If the finish was the highlight of the first goal, the delivery was the best part of the second, as Israel Suero floated in a beautiful free kick that found the head of Diego Barri, who leapt beautifully to put his header past Fernandes in the Valladolid goal.

While the home side were clearly shellshocked by Castellón's quick fire double, they almost halved the deficit, but Chuki was adjudged to be in an offside position after being played through. It was a nice finish over Matthys, but the goal wasn't to be, and Castellón quickly put the game beyond any doubt.

Another well delivered corner was once again poorly cleared by Valladolid, and after some brief pinball in the box, it was Diego Barri again who got the final touch to poke it in and get his second goal of the game.

Castellón continued in full control into the second half, with Diego Barri narrowly missing a hat trick after his shot from outside the area hit the bar. There was time for one more touch of genius to cap off the masterpiece, as Brian Cipenga scored what might be the goal of the season when it's all said and done.

The Congolese picked the ball up at the corner of the area, and after a glance up curled a beautiful finish into the opposite corner, over the goalkeeper. "Brian, kids are watching!", the Spanish commentator exclaimed, with Castellón playing a level of football that deserves a parental advisory.

Ahead of Racing's game later, the albingeros are top of the table, but the next few weeks will be the true test of Castellón's title credentials. They will play third-placed Deportivo, sixth-placed Las Palmas, and then Racing. Nine points against direct title rivals would almost certainly make the albingeros title favourites, but there is a long way to go before that tag is thrown about.

However El Mago is continuing to work his magic, and fans are slowly allowing themselves to believe, instead of just dream.

El Castellón golea al Valladolid y se coloca en primera posición (0-4)

Sigue el sueño. Si le hubieras dicho a casi cualquier aficionado del Castellón que su equipo estaría liderando en febrero tras ganar por 0-4 al Valladolid fuera de casa, te habría preguntado cuántas cubatas te habías tomado. Pero no. Esto es muy real y, tras conseguir solo dos puntos en los cinco primeros partidos, casi mágico. Pero bueno, al mando está un hombre conocido como El Mago, así que quizá no debería sorprendernos tanto.

El partido de ayer en el José Zorilla fue otro ejemplo más de la inteligencia táctica de Pablo Hernández, pero también de la importancia de las jugadas a balón parado en el juego del Castellón versión 2026. El holandés Rody Hoegee fue fichado en verano para mejorar los resultados del Castellón en ese aspecto, y la mejora del equipo ha sido evidente. Tres de los cuatro goles de ayer llegaron a balón parado, tambien ayudados por una mala defensa del Valladolid.

El primero llegó tras un despeje erróneo desde un córner, con Ousmane Camara completamente solo en el área para batir al portero tras un inteligente pase de Beñat Gerenabarrena. Si el remate fue lo más destacado del primer gol, el pase fue lo mejor del segundo, ya que Israel Suero lanzó un precioso tiro libre que encontró la cabeza de Diego Barri, quien saltó maravillosamente para cabecear y batir a Fernandes en la portería del Valladolid.

Aunque el equipo local estaba claramente impactado por el rápido doblete del Castellón, estuvo a punto de reducir a la mitad la diferencia, pero Chuki fue declarado en fuera de juego tras recibir un pase en profundidad. Antes del partido del Racing, los albingeros son líderes de la tabla, pero las próximas semanas serán la verdadera prueba para las credenciales de Castellón como aspirante al título. After hard fought 0-0 draw away to Granada last weekend, the albinegros returned to Castalia to face Leganés - 18th-place finishers in last year's La Liga - who have had a torrid season in the second tier. Los pepineros were among the preseason favourites to go up, but they are now entrenched in mid-table mediocrity after a poor start to the season even saw them flirt with the relegation places. And on a rainy Friday night, Castellón produced another extremely solid performance to see off the Leganés 2-0 and place themselves in the top three, ahead of rest of the weekend's matches.

It was a fantastic opening half an hour for the albinegros, as they limited Leganés to no real chances and exerted massive pressure out of possession. The relentlessness paid off, and it was Awer Mabil who volleyed home to give Castellón the lead, after Brignani headed the ball down beautifully from a free kick. The Leganés keeper was left helpless as the Australian's powerful finish found the top corner.

Ousmane Camara forced a good save from Soriano just after the half hour mark, and the Guinean was involved in the most controversial incident of the game to kick off the second half, as Castellón had a goal disallowed after a very tight offside call. Camara controlled a header from Mellot, however as the lines were drawn, the officials ruled he was offside by a fraction of a sleeve. President Bob Voulgaris, Pablo Hernández and all of the fans, me included were left perplexed.

Leganés had a fantastic opportunity to equalise on the hour mark after a crossfield ball over the defence found Juan Cruz, and although he was able to poke the ball around Matthys, it was left back Lucas Alcazar who made it back just in time to clear it off the line.

In the end, despite a couple of nervy moments in the second half, the game was sealed as Amadou Diawara pushed Calatrava in the box, and Israel Suero confidently converted the resulting penalty with five minutes left in normal time.

Pablo's message to the fans in the post-match press conference was clear - enjoy these moments, it's been a long time since something like this has happened here. Castellón have an identity, are the best in the league at recovering possession after losing it, and have a squad that Pablo has made into a real cohesive team. The Leganés game marked the first round of the return fixtures, and while the season is still far from over, Castellón are ideally positioned to make a run at promotion as early as May.

They next face relegation-troubled Real Zaragoza, in a game they will expect to win, although their opponents are coming off an impressive win over leaders Racing and face Real Sociedad B later today.

A promising defender joins, and an iconic one leaves

While Castellón's first team squad was heavily strengthened in the summer, the club is always looking for potential, and that is what they have found in Ismael Fadel. The 21-year-old joins from Yeclano, where he has made 17 appearances in the fourth tier so far this season. Capable of playing as a centre back or in defensive midfield, the Moroccan will initially play for the B team, but is someone who the club hopes will go on to feature for the first team in the not so distant future.

Meanwhile, Castellón's promotion winning captain, Oscar Gil, has departed, after a fantastic three and a half seasons with the club. One of Bob Voulgaris's first signings at the helm, the centre back was a huge presence not just on the pitch but also off it, and will now join Real Murcia to help them in their fight for promotion to La Liga 2. A regular starter until last season, the man from Navarra found getting playing time difficult of late, especially after the arrivals of Fabrizio Brignani and Agustin Sienra in the summer. We wish him all the best, and hope that he can add another promotion to his resume in the next few months!

Castellón vuelve a la senda de la victoria, Fadel ficha y Oscar Gil se despide

Tras el reñido empate a cero fuera de casa contra el Granada el pasado fin de semana, los albinegros regresaron al Castalia para enfrentarse al Leganés, que terminó en el puesto 18 de la Liga el año pasado y que está teniendo una temporada muy difícil en la segunda división. Los pepineros eran uno de los favoritos para ascender antes de empezar la temporada, pero ahora están atrapados en la mediocridad de la mitad de la tabla después de un mal comienzo que incluso los llevó a coquetear con los puestos de descenso. Y en una lluviosa noche de viernes, el Castellón volvió a hacer un partido muy sólido para ganar 2-0 al Leganés y colocarse entre los tres primeros, antes de que se jugaran los demás partidos del fin de semana.

Los albinegros tuvieron una fantástica primera media hora, en la que limitaron al Leganés a no crear ocasiones de peligro y ejercieron una gran presión sin tener la posesión del balón. El partido contra el Leganés marcó la primera vuelta de los encuentros de la segunda fase, y aunque la temporada aún está lejos de terminar, el Castellón se encuentra en una posición ideal para luchar por el ascenso ya en mayo.

Su próximo rival es el Real Zaragoza, que lucha por evitar el descenso, en un partido que esperan ganar, aunque su rival viene de una impresionante victoria sobre el líder, el Racing, y se enfrenta hoy al Real Sociedad B.

Se incorpora un defensa prometedor y se marcha uno emblemático

Aunque la plantilla del primer equipo del Castellón se reforzó considerablemente durante el verano, el club siempre está buscando potencial, y eso es lo que han encontrado en Ismael Fadel. Pablo Hernández's team selection and standout individual performances had Huesca out of the game by half-time and keep the albinegros in the hunt for the top spots.

Despite losing away to Cadiz in the last game before Christmas, which put an end to a five-game winning run, Castellón came into the game full of confidence and, crucially, with their manager back in the dugout after recovering from kidney stones.

Pablo Hernández made a couple of changes, including starting Ronaldo Pompeu in midfield in the place of Gerenabarrena, and they paid dividends early on. From watching highlights of previous games, it was clear to see that Huesca conceded many of their goals the same way - in transition and from crosses. So the inclusion of Ronaldo was overwhelmingly logical, with the Brazilian's prowess at set-pieces and crosses his main asset.

It only took 19 minutes for the Brazilian to get involved in Castellón's second goal, with a beautifully delivered free kick that found the onrushing Brignani, to give the Italian centre-back his second goal of the season. That was after Calatrava put away a penalty to give Castellón the lead inside of 1o minutes, in an outstanding start to the game.

After 30 minutes, a low cross from Camara that was flicked on by Calatrava found Pablo Santiago alone at the back post, who controlled and calmly drilled it past the keeper to put Castellón 3-0 and cap off one of the albinegros most dominant first half perfomances of the season.

A second half goal from Huesca was quickly answered after a phenomenal run from Athletic loanee Gere, with the 22-year-old holding off a defender to finish well past the Huesca keeper.

Beyond the fantastic performance and result to start 2026, there were a number of important points to take away.

1. Castellón have squad depth/options to counter almost all challenges

This is by far the biggest difference to last year, and why the team as a whole is shining so brightly. The recruitment in the summer has meant that Castellón can much more specifically target opponent weaknesses. Huesca were defending transitions, more dynamic play and rotations, and Pablo Hernandez made changes accordingly. We have seen him regularly swap between Barri-Gere, Barri-Doue, and Barri-Ronaldo in the middle of the park, and also with Camara and Jakobsen up front. It also means the squad is clearly less vulnerable to injuries due to the squad rotation, which was the team's downfall around this time last year. It would be extremely surprising to see the same thing happen again.

2. Romain Matthys is making the number one spot his own

Matthys did not start the season as the clear number one, but he has gone from strength to strength, especially over the last few games. Both his reading of the game and his presence in the box have improved significantly as he has gotten comfortable in Castellón's setup. The Huesca goal came off a rebound from a fine save he made, and he also made a couple of key interventions during Huesca's strong spell early in the second half.

Over his 16 starts this year, Matthys has conceded 1.13 goals per 90, a 0.5 improvement compared to the four games he wasn't starting. Granted, there has been a general defensive improvement under Pablo, but having Matthys become more comfortable in the Gonzalo role from last year has clearly been crucial.

3. Brignani was signed for his offense, not just his defending

While this was quite clear from his profile at the time of his €1 million+ transfer from Mantova (11 goals in 58 appearances), he has started in much the same way for the albinegros. After his second goal in 11 appearances yesterday, his ability to provide a threat from set pieces and crosses is extremely high level.

It's not only about height and heading the ball, Brignani seems to be able to anticipate and read trajectories very well, and has the technique to finish also. He has certainly had to fight for his place in the starting XI, but it's clear that when Castellón are up against teams who are vulnerable aerially, he is somebody the team can count on.

4. Ousmane Camara and/or Adam Jakobsen?

After his brace in the penultimate game before Christmas, Camara delivered another fantastic performance against Huesca, in what was his fifth consecutive start. Summer signing Adam Jakobsen played six minutes yesterday after being out with an injury, so it will be very interesting to see how Pablo Hernández uses his two strikers in the upcoming games. Naturally, Jakobsen is a more physical option, with a strong ability in the air but also in hold up play. Camara drops a lot deeper, and can act as a second playmaker, as he did with Pablo Santiago's goal.

While we haven't yet seen two strikers used under Pablo Hernández, the idea of playing both seems like a fun idea, especially as they complement each other quite well. It is unlikely to be a go-to option for Pablo, as doing so might compromise the solidity in the centre of the park if you have to remove one midfielder. But certainly something to think about in-game if a situation arose.

Castellón's next game will see them take on strugglers Granada, who were beaten by Almeria yesterday afternoon. The Nazaries also have a Copa del Rey game midweek against Rayo Vallecano, so there is clearly a great opportunity for three points away from home and to potentially overtake Las Palmas, who face a tough game next Saturday against Deportivo.

La alineación de Pablo Hernández y las destacadas actuaciones individuales dejaron al Huesca fuera del partido en el descanso y mantienen a los albinegros en la lucha por los primeros puestos.

A pesar de perder fuera de casa ante el Cádiz en el último partido antes de Navidad, lo que puso fin a una racha de cinco victorias consecutivas, el Castellón llegó al partido lleno de confianza y, lo que es más importante, con su entrenador de vuelta en el banquillo tras recuperarse de un colico renal.

Pablo Hernández realizó un par de cambios, entre ellos la titularidad de Ronaldo Pompeu en el centro del campo en lugar de Gerenabarrena, que dieron sus frutos desde el principio. Al ver los resúmenes de los partidos anteriores, quedaba claro que el Huesca encajaba muchos de sus goles de la misma manera: en transición y a partir de centros. Por lo tanto, la inclusión de Ronaldo era totalmente lógica, ya que la destreza del brasileño en las jugadas a balón parado y los centros es su principal cualidad.

El brasileño solo tardó 19 minutos en participar en el segundo gol del Castellón, con un magnífico lanzamiento de falta que encontró a Brignani, que corría hacia la portería, y que supuso el segundo gol de la temporada para el central italiano. Más allá de la magnífica actuación y el resultado con el que ha comenzado 2026, hay que destacar varios aspectos importantes.

1. Castellón tiene profundidad y opciones en la plantilla para hacer frente a casi todos los retos

Esta es, con diferencia, la mayor diferencia con respecto al año pasado, y la razón por la que el equipo en su conjunto está brillando tanto. Los fichajes realizados en verano han permitido al Castellón centrarse de forma mucho más específica en las debilidades del rival. El Huesca defendía las transiciones, el juego más dinámico y las rotaciones, y Pablo Hernández hizo los cambios oportunos. Le hemos visto cambiar regularmente entre Barri-Gere, Barri-Doue y Barri-Ronaldo en el centro del campo, y también con Camara y Jakobsen en la delantera. Esto también significa que la plantilla es claramente menos vulnerable a las lesiones gracias a la rotación, que fue la perdición del equipo por estas fechas el año pasado. Sería muy sorprendente que volviera a ocurrir lo mismo.

2. Romain Matthys se está haciendo con el puesto de titular

Matthys no comenzó la temporada como titular indiscutible, pero ha ido mejorando cada vez más, especialmente en los últimos partidos. Tanto su lectura del juego como su presencia en el área han mejorado significativamente a medida que se ha ido sintiendo más cómodo en el sistema de Castellón.

El gol del Huesca llegó tras un rebote de una gran parada que realizó, y también hizo un par de intervenciones clave durante el buen momento del Huesca al comienzo de la segunda parte.

En sus 16 partidos como titular este año, Matthys ha encajado 1,13 goles por cada 90 minutos, lo que supone una mejora de 0,5 en comparación con los cuatro partidos en los que no fue titular. Es cierto que ha habido una mejora general en la defensa con Pablo, pero el hecho de que Matthys se haya sentido más cómodo en el papel que desempeñó Gonzalo el año pasado ha sido claramente crucial.

3. Brignani fue fichado por su capacidad ofensiva, no solo por su defensa

Aunque esto ya quedaba bastante claro en su perfil cuando fue traspasado por más de un millón de euros desde el Mantova (11 goles en 58 partidos), ha empezado de forma muy similar con los albinegros. Tras su segundo gol en 11 partidos ayer, su capacidad para crear peligro a balón parado y en los centros es de muy alto nivel.

No se trata solo de su altura y su juego de cabeza, Brignani parece ser capaz de anticiparse y leer muy bien las trayectorias, y además tiene la técnica necesaria para rematar. Sin duda, ha tenido que luchar por su puesto en el once inicial, pero está claro que cuando el Castellón se enfrenta a equipos vulnerables en el juego aéreo, es alguien con quien el equipo puede contar.

4. ¿Ousmane Camara y/o Adam Jakobsen?

Tras su doblete en el penúltimo partido antes de Navidad, Camara volvió a cuajar una fantástica actuación contra el Huesca, en lo que fue su quinta titularidad consecutiva. Adam Jakobsen, fichaje del verano, jugó ayer seis minutos tras estar de baja por lesión, por lo que será muy interesante ver cómo Pablo Hernández utiliza a sus dos delanteros en los próximos partidos. Naturalmente, Jakobsen es una opción más física, con una gran capacidad en el juego aéreo, pero también en el juego de contención. Camara se retrasa mucho más y puede actuar como segundo creador de juego, como hizo en el gol de Pablo Santiago.

Aunque todavía no hemos visto a Pablo Hernández utilizar a dos delanteros, la idea de jugar con ambos parece interesante, sobre todo porque se complementan bastante bien. Es poco probable que sea una opción habitual para Pablo, ya que hacerlo podría comprometer la solidez en el centro del campo si hay que sacar a un centrocampista. Pero sin duda es algo a tener en cuenta durante el partido si se da la situación.

El próximo partido del Castellón será contra el Granada, que ayer por la tarde cayó derrotado ante el Almería. Los nazaríes también tienen un partido de Copa del Rey entre semana contra el Rayo Vallecano, por lo que es una gran oportunidad para sumar tres puntos fuera de casa y, potencialmente, superar al Las Palmas, que el próximo sábado se enfrenta a un difícil partido contra el Deportivo.

Once upon a time, Yaya Touré was seen galloping across the pitch at the Etihad Stadium, with an unprecedented combination of power and technique that terrified Premier League opposition for years.

Summer signing Marc-Olivier Doué has been doing his best imitation of that over the past few games at Castalia, and it was his goal, as well as a brace from Ousmane Camara off the bench, that sealed the three points for Castellón on Monday night against Mirandés. Castellón and have now won five in a row and sit fourth in the table, with one trip to Cadiz left before the Christmas break.

While the 3-1 scoreline perhaps doesn't give enough credit to Mirandés, who were competitive throughout, it was another solid performance by the albinegros, who once again displayed many of the aspects they lacked at the beginning of the season, in particular their defensive organisation.

Yes, Doué gave away a penalty cheaply with an unnecessary lunge in, but besides that individual mistake, Mirandes's chances were limited. To give some context, in the 14 games Pablo has been in charge, Castellón have conceded more than one goal on only one occasion, the 5-4 goal fest against Real Sociedad B. And even there, three out of the four goals conceded game directly from individual mistakes, not the opponent's own making. Compare that to Plat's record, which saw Castellón concede two goals or more in three out of the first five games this season, and eight out of the nineteen games he was in charge last year.

Midfield control

Doue came into the starting XI to replace Athletic loanee Beñat Gerenabarrena, who alongside Diego Barri had formed the pairing for several games prior. The Frenchman established his presence early on, and highlighted the huge depth of talent in central midfield at Pablo Hernandez's disposal. More than depth, it's about options, the decision to go for Doue over Gere was likely in reponse to the more dynamic style of Mirandés, and it was a great call.

Whether it's Gere or Doué who partners Barri in the middle of the park, having two legitimate central midfielders, one of whom can play a more defensive role if needed, has been a massive difference maker under Pablo Hernández. The way the team want to play, Castellón absolutely need at least one tireless midfielder, if not two, and but have three in Barri, Doué, and Gere.

Camara seizes his moment

It certainly wasn't the easiest of starts for the Guinean who signed from Auxerre in August 2024. He was signed injured and only made his debut in December, before being eased into the starting striker role he was expected to occupy. While Camara's contributions last year were more to be seen in the linking and hold up play - 3 goals in 16 games - this year he has taken his finishing up a level, and finished off more of his opportunities, with five goals already in 12 appearances.

Just like they do in midfield, Castellón simply have more options in the central striker role this season. In addition to Camara, they have record signing Adam Jakobsen, and Nick Markanich, who started the game on Monday. The American has been developing well after joining from Charleston in January, and challenging for more minutes in a starting role.

With Castellón's forward three so flexible in their positions - the wingers often end up cutting inside onto their stronger foot - the goals can really come from anywhere, but having different options down the middle to hold up play and function as another playmaker as well as score has been invaluable.

Sí, Doue cometió un penalti innecesario con una entrada imprudente, pero, aparte de ese error individual, las ocasiones del Mirandés fueron limitadas. Para contextualizar, en los 14 partidos que lleva Pablo al frente del equipo, el Castellón solo ha encajado más de un gol en una ocasión, en la goleada por 5-4 contra la Real Sociedad B. E incluso allí, tres de los cuatro goles encajados fueron consecuencia directa de errores individuales, no de la propia actuación del rival. Compárese eso con el historial de Plat, que vio cómo el Castellón encajaba dos o más goles en tres de los cinco primeros partidos de esta temporada, y en ocho de los diecinueve partidos que dirigió el año pasado.

Control del mediocampo

Doue entró en el once inicial para sustituir a Benat Gerenabarrena, cedido por el Athletic, que junto con Diego Barri había formado la pareja durante varios partidos anteriores. El francés se hizo notar desde el principio y puso de manifiesto la gran profundidad de talento con la que cuenta Pablo Hernández en el mediocampo. Más que profundidad, se trata de opciones, y la decisión de apostar por Doue en lugar de Gere fue probablemente una respuesta al estilo más dinámico del Mirandes, y fue una decisión acertada.

Ya sea Gere o Doue quien acompañe a Barri en el centro del campo, contar con dos centrocampistas legítimos, uno de los cuales puede desempeñar un papel más defensivo si es necesario, ha marcado una gran diferencia bajo la dirección de Pablo Hernández. Dada la forma en que el equipo quiere jugar, el Castellón necesita absolutamente al menos un centrocampista incansable, si no dos, y cuenta con tres: Barri, Doue y Gere.

Camara aprovecha su oportunidad

Sin duda, no fue el comienzo más fácil para el guineano, que fichó procedente del Auxerre en agosto de 2024. Llegó lesionado y no debutó hasta diciembre, antes de ir ganando confianza en el puesto de delantero titular que se esperaba que ocupara. Si bien las contribuciones de Camara el año pasado se vieron más en el juego de enlace y de apoyo (3 goles en 16 partidos), este año ha mejorado su puntería y ha aprovechado más sus oportunidades, con cinco goles en 12 partidos.

Al igual que en el centro del campo, el Castellón simplemente tiene más opciones en la posición de delantero centro esta temporada. Además de Camara, cuenta con el fichaje récord Adam Jakobsen y Nick Markanich, que fue titular el lunes. El estadounidense se ha desarrollado bien tras llegar procedente del Charleston en enero y está luchando por tener más minutos como titular.

Con los tres atacantes del Castellón tan flexibles en sus posiciones —los extremos suelen recortar hacia dentro para usar su pie más fuerte—, los goles pueden llegar desde cualquier sitio, pero contar con diferentes opciones en el centro para retener el balón y actuar como otro creador de juego, además de marcar, ha sido inestimable.

It might seem a disrespectful label, but the season CD Mirandés had last campaign was nothing short of sensational. Led by highly regarded Italian manager Alessio Lisci, the team from near Burgos defied absolutely all odds to finish fourth, reach the playoff finals, and have Oviedo on the ropes with 45 minutes left to play in the second leg. Real Madrid could easily have, and may should have, been making a visit to the Estadio Municipal de Anduva this year, one of the most unlikely venues for a top level professional football match.

Instead, Santi Cazorla cancelled out Panichelli's opener in the second leg at the Tartiere, before Chaira and Portillo broke Mirandés hearts and condemned them to another season in Segunda. It will be a loss that will sting forever, and probably remain as the greatest "what if" in the history of the club from Ebro. Because as Oviedo celebrated on the pitch last June, Mirandés fans knew that there one chance at La Liga had gone.

Alessio Lisci announced his departure within days, having caught the attention of Osasuna, and the exodus of the star loanees began. Argentine Joaquin Panichelli returned to Alavés and was sold to Strasbourg, where he has racked up 9 goals in 15 games. Urko Izeta, another key contributor, returned to Athletic, where he has integrated the senior team made five La Liga appearances so far this year.

As they do almost every summer, Mirandés rebuilt their squad from scratch, with only two players remaining from the promotion run. 17 loanees make up the bulk of their team for this campaign, with Jesús Galván drafted in as manager in November after a poor start. However that's the problem for Mirandés.

Their approach means that every season is a lottery, where staying in the division is a small prize, and anything more is hitting the jackpot. This season's batch of loanees have certainly not been the latter, with the team currently 21st, only ahead of Real Zaragoza.

In truth, given the circumstances, it's not been a terrible run. They are still a team capable of grinding out close results, like the 0-0 away draw against Las Palmas last week, or the 1-0 win against Real Sociedad B the week before. And it certainly seems that Galvan has had a positive impact on the team since his appointment. The question is will that be enough to seriously turn things around, and survive another year in the division.

Making the trip to Castellón will be another tough test, against the current best form team in the league. While the idea will be to try for more than a point, Castellón will no doubt face a Mirandés team keen to put in a similar performance to their 0-0 against Las Palmas, and contain the albinegro tidal wave as much as possible. It will be the last home game before Christmas at Castalia, and despite the Monday night kick off, the fans should hopefully be out in force.

Castellón assistant manager Sergi Ripollés described Mirandés as "dangerous in transition" and "very dynamic", as well as a team who never stop running.

CD Mirandés, la estrella fugaz

Porque mientras Oviedo celebraba en el campo el pasado mes de junio, los aficionados del Mirandés sabían que se había esfumado su única oportunidad de llegar a La Liga.

Aunque la idea será intentar conseguir más de un punto, el Castellón se enfrentará sin duda a un Mirandés deseoso de repetir la actuación del 0-0 contra Las Palmas y contener en la medida de lo posible la marea albinegra. Será el último partido en casa antes de Navidad en el Castalia y, a pesar de que se juega el lunes por la noche, es de esperar que los aficionados acudan en masa.

El segundo entrenador del Castellón, Sergi Ripollés, describió al Mirandés como «peligroso en la transición» y «muy dinámico», además de un equipo que nunca deja de correr.

The blog is back! After a much longer than planned hiatus, I'm getting back to long form CD Castellón content. While I'm no longer a regular in the press box at the top of Castalia, and currently spend less time in Castellón than I would like, the team is just getting started. The revolution is televised in La Liga 2, and I'm determined that it will also be documented on Pam Pam Football.

If you don't follow me on X, we left off here with Castellón making a decent start to life in Segunda under Dick Schreuder, and a lot of fan optimism. Just over a year later, it is Castellón and Leeds legend Pablo Hernandez leading the charge, and there is arguably an even greater sense of optimism in La Plana, with the team in the playoffs spots and coming off a phenomenal 3-1 away win to promotion contenders Deportivo La Coruña.

Between then and now, we saw the sacking of Dick Schreuder and the appointment of his assistant Johan Plat, who narrowly saved the team from relegation at the end of last campaign. He too was let go after a home draw with Ceuta in September, and replaced by El Mago. So it's been some rollercoaster. The end of last season was defined by injuries and arguably a loss of identity, and at the start of this one the latter issue seemed to persist. Plat struggled to get the albinegros playing effective football, and there was a sense in press conferences that he was a man short of solutions, and that the buy in from players was lacking.

The decision to promote Pablo from the B team was a logical one, especially after he led them to promotion to Segunda Federacion last year. In four short months, he has turned Castellón into arguably the most eye-catching team in the division alongside Deportivo and league leaders Racing, allowing the team to rediscover their goalscoring form while establishing an extremely something defensive base. The latter was not something the albinegros ever had under Plat, and even arguably with Schreuder's style, and it's proven vital in La Liga.

Even the 12 goals conceded in 13 games under Hernández don't tell the full story. Four of them came in one game, a 5-4 barnstormer of a win against Real Sociedad B, and three of them were individual mistakes by Castellón. Under Pablo's stewardship, Castellón have only conceded a handful of times because of the other team's good play.

We have also seen the summer signings come into their own. After a second half of last season where a lack of squad depth was exposed, Bob Voulgaris and co made sure that would not be an issue, with no fewer than 14 - yes, 14 - signings.

There are many names that could be highlighted, but midfielder Marc-Olivier Doué would be close to the top of my list. A physical, athletic presence in the middle of the park, he offers something Castellón have lacked in previous seasons, not to mention the shot he has on him.

And then there's the players who were there, and have finally been given the opportunity. Signed last summer as Castellón got promoted, Congolese Brian Cipenga wowed in preseason and continued that form into the competitive fixtures. He has arguably been the team's great offensive threat so far alongside last season's star Alex Calatrava, with four goals and three assists to his name.

As a team, the albinegros have racked up the fourth most goals in the division, and the third most xG per FootyStats. They have the most points in the league over the last five games, and find themselves four points off the direct promotion places. Before the Christmas break, they face bottom team Mirandés at home, and mid-table Cadiz away. It's not entirely beyond the realms of possibility that they could be at least level with Deportivo before Santa comes by, a truly impressive turnaround.

¡Cuánto tiempo sin vernos!

¡El blog ha vuelto! Tras una pausa mucho más larga de lo previsto, vuelvo con mis artículos habituales sobre el CD Castellón. Aunque ya no soy un habitual en la tribuna de prensa del estadio Castalia y actualmente paso menos tiempo en Castellón del que me gustaría, el equipo acaba de empezar. La revolución se televisa en La Liga 2, y estoy decidido a que también quede documentada en Pam Pam Football.

Si no me sigues en X, cuando lo dejamos aquí, el Castellón estaba haciendo un buen comienzo en Segunda bajo la dirección de Dick Schreuder y con mucho optimismo entre los aficionados. Poco más de un año después, es Pablo Hernández, leyenda del Castellón y del Leeds, quien lidera la carga, y podría decirse que hay un optimismo aún mayor en La Plana, con el equipo en puestos de playoff y tras una fenomenal victoria 1-3 fuera de casa ante el Deportivo de La Coruña, aspirante al ascenso.

Entre entonces y ahora, hemos visto el despido de Dick Schreuder y el nombramiento de su asistente, Johan Plat, que salvó por los pelos al equipo del descenso al final de la pasada campaña. Él también fue despedido tras un empate en casa con el Ceuta en septiembre, y sustituido por El Mago. Así que ha sido una autentica montaña rusa de emociones. El final de la temporada pasada se caracterizó por las lesiones y, posiblemente, por una pérdida de identidad, y al comienzo de esta, este último problema parecía persistir. Plat luchó por conseguir que los albinegros jugaran un fútbol eficaz, y en las ruedas de prensa se percibía que era quizas un hombre sin soluciones.

La decisión de subir a Pablo del equipo B fue lógica, sobre todo después de que el año pasado lograra el ascenso a Segunda Federación. En solo cuatro meses, ha convertido al Castellón en el equipo más llamativo de la división, junto con el Deportivo y el líder de la liga, el Racing, permitiendo al equipo recuperar su capacidad goleadora y establecer una base defensiva muy sólida. Esto último era algo que los albinegros nunca tuvieron con Plat, e incluso podría decirse que con el estilo de Schreuder, y ha resultado vital en La Liga.

Ni siquiera los 12 goles encajados en 13 partidos con Hernández cuentan toda la historia. Cuatro de ellos se produjeron en un solo partido, una emocionante victoria por 5-4 contra el Real Sociedad B, y tres de ellos fueron errores individuales del Castellón. Bajo la dirección de Pablo, el Castellón solo ha encajado unos pocos goles debido al buen juego del equipo contrario.

También hemos visto cómo los fichajes del verano han dado sus frutos. Tras una segunda mitad de la temporada pasada en la que se puso de manifiesto la falta de profundidad de la plantilla, Bob Voulgaris y compañía se aseguraron de que eso no fuera un problema, con nada menos que 14 —sí, 14— fichajes.

Antes del parón navideño, se enfrentan al colista, el Mirandés, en casa, y al Cádiz, que ocupa la mitad de la tabla, a domicilio. No es del todo imposible que puedan igualar al menos al Deportivo antes de que llegue Papá Noel, lo que supondría un cambio de rumbo realmente impresionante.

Raúl Sánchez fue el protagonista el domingo, cuando el Castellón se impuso al Tenerife en Castalia para lograr su primera victoria de la temporada en casa, pero el resto de la semana tuvo un marcado carácter antártico, ya que los albinegros anunciaron una innovadora asociación con el proyecto NFT y la comunidad Pudgy Penguins, que verá a un ave no voladora en su equipación, y potencialmente en las camisetas, en el futuro.

Alzando el vuelo sobre el terreno de juego

Después de sumar un solo punto en sus tres primeros partidos en casa, la presión por conseguir un resultado en Castalia iba en aumento, y esta vez el equipo cumplió. No era un partido fácil ni mucho menos: el Tenerife era colista, pero sin duda tiene una plantilla que debería rendir mucho más. Recién cambiado de entrenador, el equipo que se presentó en Castalia estaba en mejor situación que el que había empezado la temporada hasta ese momento.

Fue un partido que el Castellón dominó por momentos, pero en el que el Tenerife también causó muchos problemas al conjunto local, y en el que Gonzalo Crettaz tuvo que estar majestuoso -como de costumbre-, sobre todo en los últimos compases.

Sin embargo, fue Raúl Sánchez quien realmente destacó durante todo el partido, y el extremo fue la punta de lanza del ataque del Castellón. Además de conseguir el primer gol a los 20 minutos (un sencillo cabezazo a bocajarro tras un disparo de Douglas que fue despejado bajo palos), se mostró incansable por su banda, y también dio una preciosa asistencia para el gol de la victoria de Jetro Willems, ya que el ex internacional holandés fue capaz de rematar el balón a bocajarro. Sánchez lideró al equipo en entradas y tuvo el mayor número de toques de balón de todos los jugadores ofensivos de ambos equipos, con 55.

Alzando el vuelo fuera del campo

Puede que los pingüinos no vuelen, pero parece que han dado alas al Castellón, si nos guiamos por la victoria contra el Tenerife. Porque antes del partido del domingo, hubo un anuncio aún mayor: la colaboración Pudgy Penguins x Castellón.

El mundo del fútbol y de las NFTs ha visto mucha actividad en los últimos años, pero el acuerdo alcanzado por Voulgaris y Alberto González por el que un Pudgy Penguin aparecerá en los pantalones y, potencialmente, en las camisetas del Castellón es el primero de este tipo y muy diferente a todo lo que hemos visto hasta ahora.

Hasta ahora, la implicación de los clubes de fútbol con las NFT era que su propiedad intelectual se dirigiera a la blockchain. Ya se trate de Sorare (fantasy football con tokens NFT de jugadores negociables) o Socios (compra de «acciones» en clubes que permiten al titular ciertas ventajas), siempre se aprovechaba la marca del club. El proyecto del Crawley Town, en el que la adquisición del club se financió con NFT, también ha sido interesante de seguir y ha tenido cierto éxito. Sin embargo, en este acuerdo, la propiedad intelectual original de NFT aparece en las camisetas, en lo que es más una colaboración que un acuerdo de patrocinio tradicional.

Pudgy Penguins fue creada por un grupo de estudiantes universitarios en 2021 como una colección de 8.888 NFT únicos, y más tarde pasó a manos de Luca Schnetzler en 2022. Ha ido viento en popa, con una gran comunidad y ahora incluso con una gama de figuras coleccionables que se venden en Walmart entre otros merch. Con una fuerte presencia en Instagram y una serie de colaboraciones con influencers, el suelo (el precio más barato al que se puede comprar uno) rondaba los 27.000 dólares en el momento de escribir estas líneas.

Si hay un ejemplo de asociación en la que todos salen ganando, es éste. Pudgy Penguins consigue una gran exposición en un mercado en el que antes no se les conocía, y la oportunidad de que su proyecto aparezca potencialmente en el centro de los partidos de LaLiga en el futuro, si los planes del club llegan a buen puerto. Aunque ver a un Pudgy Penguin haciendo una entrada a Kylian Mbappé probablemente no sea para esta temporada, trabajar con el Castellón les brinda una oportunidad fantástica de cara al futuro.

Para los albinegros, además de los obvios beneficios económicos, también ganan una enorme exposición internacional, y se convierten en el nuevo club favorito de la comunidad de casi dos millones de personas. Los más de 13.000 poseedores de un Pudgy Penguin o de un Lil Pudgy (la colección hermana) probablemente acabarán comprando merchandising del club, y puede que incluso visiten Castalia para ver un partido en persona.

En definitiva, se trata de la unión de dos comunidades increíblemente fuertes, y será interesante ver a largo plazo cómo se desarrolla la colaboración. El fútbol español nunca ha visto nada igual, y tampoco un proyecto original de NFT.

Raúl Sánchez was the protagonist on Sunday, as Castellón overcame Tenerife at Castalia to secure their first home win of the season, but the rest of the week felt distinctly Antarctic, as the albinegros announced an innovative partnership with NFT project and community Pudgy Penguins, which will see a flightless bird feature on their shorts, and potentially the shirts, going forward.

Taking flight on the pitch

After picking up only one point from their first three home games, the pressure had been building to get a result at Castalia, and this time the team delivered. It was not an easy game by any means - Tenerife were bottom, but certainly have a squad that should be performing much higher. Fresh off a managerial change, the side that turned up to Castalia was in a better place than the one that had started the season up until that point.

It was a game that Castellón dominated in spells, but where Tenerife also caused the home side a lot of problems, and Gonzalo Crettaz had to be majestic - as usual - especially in the closing stages.

However it was Raúl Sánchez who really stood out throughout the game, and the winger was the one spearheading Castellón’s attack. More than getting the opening goal after 20 minutes (a simple header from close range after a shot from Douglas was cleared off the line), he was tireless on his wing, and also provided a beautiful assist for Jetro Willems’s winning goal, as the former Dutch international was able turn the ball in from close range. Sánchez led the team in tackles and had the most touches of any offensive player on either team with 55.

Willems was once again impactful off the bench after replacing Jozhua at the 65-minute-mark. A player with his physical presence is hard to come by, and with his fitness now in a good place, he has made a big contribution and will look to get a chance in Dick Schreuder’s starting XI sooner rather than later.

For the Canarians, Luismi did much of the damage, initially hitting the bar with a well struck free kick before indirectly assisting the equaliser, after beating three Castellón defenders. Their number 11 also forced a fantastic save by Gonzalo in added time, the Argentine getting down well with a strong hand to turn his curling effort around the post.

The albinegros will now look to record consecutive wins for the first time this season as they head to Eldense, a side that finished just ahead of them in Primera RFEF two seasons ago.

Taking flight off the pitch

Penguins may not fly, but they certainly seem to have given Castellón some wings, if the win against Tenerife is anything to go by. Because before the game on Sunday, there was maybe an even bigger announcement - the Pudgy Penguins x Castellón collaboration.

The world of football and NFTs has seen a lot of activity of the last few years, but the deal struck by Voulgaris and Alberto González that will see a Pudgy Penguin appear on Castellón’s shorts and potentially shirts is the first of its kind and very different from anything we have seen so far.

Until now, the involvement of football clubs with NFTs was their IP heading to the blockchain. Whether it’s Sorare (fantasy football with tradable player NFT tokens), or Socios (buying “shares” in clubs which allow the holder certain perks), it was always the club’s branding being leveraged. The project at Crawley Town - where the takeover of the club was funded through NFTs - has also been interesting to follow, and somewhat successful. But this deal sees original NFT IP head onto the shirts, in what is more of a collaboration than a traditional sponsorship deal.

Pudgy Penguins was started by a group of university students in 2021 as a collection of 8,888 unique NFTs, and was later taken over by Luca Schnetzler in 2022. It has gone from strength to strength, with a large community and now even featuring a range of collectible figures that are sold in Walmart amongst other merch. With a strong presence on Instagram and a number of influencer collaborations, the floor (cheapest price you can buy one) was around $27,000 at the time of writing.

Depending on much money the project can raise to contribute to its Castellón collaboration, there’s a chance that some matchday shirts could also feature the penguins. In order to achieve this, a limited edition NFT was launched which will give holders the chance to feature their penguin on the team’s shorts at some point later this campaign.

If there is ever an example of a “win-win” partnership, then this is it. Pudgy Penguins gets mainstream exposure in a market where they would have been previously unheard of, and the chance for their project to potentially feature front and center in LaLiga games in the future, if the club’s plans come to fruition. While seeing a Pudgy Penguin going in for tackle on Kylian Mbappe probably won’t be for this season, working with Castellón gives them a fantastic opportunity going forward.

For the albinegros, besides the obvious financial benefits, they also gain massive exposure internationally, and become the new favourite club of community of almost two million people. The over 13,000 holders of either a Pudgy Penguin or a Lil Pudgy (the sister collection) will likely end up buying club merch, and maybe even paying Castalia a visit for a game in person.

Ultimately, it’s two incredibly strong communities coming together, and it will be fun to see long term how the collaboration develops. Spanish football has certainly never seen anything like it, and neither has an original NFT project.

El 0-0 del domingo ante el Oviedo fue el primer encuentro sin goles del Castellón de Dick Schreuder, tras 45 partidos al frente del equipo. Sin embargo, el resultado no fue un fiel reflejo de lo visto sobre el terreno de juego, como sí ocurrió ante el Eibar la semana anterior en el partido inaugural de la temporada.

En realidad, los albinegros fueron dominadores en ambos partidos, pero no lograron ver puerta, lo que les deja con sólo un punto de seis. El VAR también jugó en contra de Douglas durante el partido contra el Eibar, ya que el gol del brasileño fue anulado por fuera de juego en una jugada muy reñida. A pesar de la falta de puntería, el ambiente ha sido abrumadoramente positivo, desde el club, los aficionados e incluso los neutrales que están viendo la oferta del Castellón por primera vez en la segunda división.

Los números no mienten. Por poner algunos, el Castellón es sexto en gol average esperado/90, undécimo en goles esperados/90 y tercero en pases progresivos. Todo muy diferente a su actual 17ª posición, lo que hace pensar que si siguen por el mismo camino, esa diferencia debería desaparecer a medida que avance la temporada.

De los que tuvieron minutos importantes contra el Eibar y el Oviedo, Daijiro Chirino se ha mostrado imperial en defensa, y tiene todos los atributos de un jugador que acabará en la elite. Álex Calatrava también impresionó saliendo desde el banquillo en ambos partidos, y se mostró eléctrico en la banda con sus intrépidos regates. En sus 52 minutos de juego, el fichaje estival del Atlético B acumuló 1,13 xG/90 para liderar al equipo en esa métrica y figurar entre los diez mejores de la liga. Raúl Sánchez y Douglas Aurelio también parecieron jugadores del nivel de la Liga, y el brasileño en particular tendrá sin duda muchos pretendientes en el futuro.

Un gran compromiso para un gran fichaje

En la era Bob Voulgaris, la mayoría de los fichajes del Castellón han tenido un riesgo relativamente bajo ( fichajes libres y contratos de un año), con la excepción de Douglas Aurelio, en el que se produjo tanto un pago por el traspaso al Riga FC como un contrato de cuatro años para el jugador. Ousmane Camara puede añadirse ahora a la lista, después de que el Castellón llegara a un acuerdo con el Auxerre por el que el guineano firmará por cinco temporadas en Castalia como uno de los grandes fichajes del verano.

El futbolista, de 23 años, que a principios de este año se estrenó con la selección de Guinea, pasó por la afamada cantera del Auxerre y llegó a debutar en la Ligue 1 en 2022/23. Tras la falta de minutos de juego, el año pasado se marchó cedido al Annecy de la Ligue 2, donde marcó 6 goles en 15 partidos, además de dos asistencias.

Los aficionados albinegros tienen razón para estar entusiasmados, y si el compromiso del club sirve de algo, Camara tiene un potencial increíblemente alto. Además de sus goles, el aspecto defensivo fue probablemente también atractivo: se encuentra en el percentil 99 entre los delanteros de ligas de nivel similar en cuanto a bloqueos y entradas, según FBRef. Con el sistema de presión alta de Dick, la capacidad de un delantero para recuperar el balón en la parte alta del campo es una ventaja añadida que podría ayudar a generar aún más oportunidades de gol.

El trayecto de Camara hasta el fútbol europeo también es digno de una superproducción de Hollywood. Tras crecer en Conakry, tomó la decisión de perseguir sus sueños futbolísticos y viajó a través de África, acabando en la cárcel en Libia antes de llegar a Italia en una balsa para 60 personas, viendo a gente ahogarse en el proceso. Llegó a Francia y a Nîmes, donde fue ojeado por el Auxerre, y donde, por fin, pudo empezar su carrera.

Aunque los aficionados tendrán que esperar un poco para verle debutar debido a una lesión, Camara promete iluminar Castalia en cuanto se asiente y se sienta cómodo en el sistema de Dick.

Sunday’s 0-0 draw with Oviedo was the first goalless encounter of Dick Schreuder’s Castellón’s tenure, after 45 games in charge. However the result was not a fair reflection of the action on the pitch, as was the case against Eibar the week before in the season opener.

In truth, the albinegros were dominant in both games, but failed to find the net, leaving them with just one point from six. VAR also worked against Douglas during the Eibar game, as the Brazilian’s goal was ruled out for offside in a close call. Despite the lack of finishing, the mood has been overwhelmingly positive, from the club, fans, and even neutrals who are seeing Castellón’s offering for the first time in the second tier.

The numbers don’t lie. Just to provide a few, Castellón are sixth in xGD/90, eleventh in xG/90 and third in progressive passes. All very different to their current position of 17th, which suggests that if they carry on in the same way, that difference should vanish as the season continues.

Of those who had significant playing time against Eibar and Oviedo, Daijiro Chirino has looked imperial in defence, and has all the attributes of a player who will end up amongst the elite. Álex Calatrava also impressed coming off the bench in both games, and was electric on the wing with his fearless dribbling. In his 52 minutes of playing time, the summer signing from Atlético B racked up 1.13 xG/90 to lead the team in that metric and feature in the league’s top ten. Raul Sánchez and Douglas Aurelio also looked like La Liga level players, and the Brazilian in particular will no doubt have plenty of suitors going forward.

A big commitment for a big signing

In the Bob Voulgaris era, the majority of Castellón’s signings have been relatively low risk (free transfers and one year deals), with the exception of Douglas Aurelio, where there was both a transfer fee for Riga FC and a four year deal for the player. Ousmane Camara can now be added to the list, after Castellón agreed a deal with Auxerre that will see the Guinean sign at Castalia for five seasons as one of the major summer signings.

The 23-year-old, who earnt his first cap for Guinea earlier this year, came up through the famed Auxerre youth setup and made his debut in Ligue 1 in 2022/23. After a lack of game time, he made the move to Annecy in Ligue 2 on loan last year, scoring 6 goals in 15 games, as well as two assists.

Albinegro fans are right to be excited, and if the club’s commitment is anything to go by, Camara has incredibly high potential. As well as his goals, the defensive aspect was probably also attractive - he ranks in the 99th percentile among strikers in similar level leagues for blocks and tackles, per FBRef. With Dick’s high pressing system, the ability for a striker to win the ball back high up the pitch is an added bonus that could help generate even more scoring opportunities.

Camara’s journey to European football is also worthy of a Hollywood blockbuster. Growing up in Conakry, he made the decision to chase his footballing dreams and travelled across Africa, ending up in prison in Libya before making it to Italy on a 60-person raft, seeing people drown in the process. He made it to France and Nîmes, where he was scouted by Auxerre, and where, finally, his career could begin.

While fans might have to wait a bit to see him make his debut due to an injury, Camara promises to light up Castalia once he is settled in and comfortable in Dick’s system.

Por primera vez en la memoria reciente (y para algunos, desde siempre), los aficionados del Castellón han tenido un verano relajado pero lleno de ilusión. El año pasado fue «¿ascenderemos?», el anterior «¿sobreviviremos como club?», y el anterior fue «lidiar con la decepción del descenso». E incluso el año anterior no se pudo disfrutar del ascenso debido al confinamiento. Esta vez es diferente.

Después de ganar la liga con varios partidos de margen, la ciudad ha podido afrontar con ilusión el reto de la segunda división, con un plan en marcha y mucho optimismo. La primera gran prueba llegará hoy, en Ipurua, ante el Eibar, uno de los principales aspirantes al ascenso y un equipo que obtuvo el segundo mejor registro en casa la pasada campaña.

Los fichajes

Como era de esperar, el Castellón ha estado muy activo, con siete fichajes realizados hasta la fecha, y probablemente más por venir. El extremo congoleño Brian Cipenga fue la primera incorporación, tras jugar la pasada campaña en el Paços Ferreira de la segunda división portuguesa. El de Kinshasa, un veloz diestro que suele jugar como extremo invertido por la izquierda, debería ofrecer al Castellón muchas opciones en el último tercio. El nigeriano Kenneth Mamah ofrece un perfil similar, pero en la otra banda, como zurdo, y procede del Göztepe turco, al que ayudó a ascender a la Superlig la temporada pasada.

A una plantilla del Castellón que ya contaba con algunos jugadores holandeses el año pasado, se han sumado algunos más, y de serio calibre. Tal vez el fichaje del verano, los albinegros dieron un auténtico golpe de efecto al incorporar al centrocampista Thomas Van den Belt, cedido por el Feyenoord, un jugador que destacó a las órdenes de Dick Schreuder en el PEC Zwolle, con el que ganó el premio de mejor jugador de segunda división durante su campaña de ascenso. El año pasado disputó nueve partidos en la Eredivisie con el Feyenoord, y promete ser no sólo una de las estrellas del Castellón, sino también uno de los 10 mejores jugadores de Segunda esta temporada.

Junto al futbolista de 23 años llegan desde Holanda Jetro Willems y Mats Seuntjens, que aportan al equipo una gran experiencia en la máxima categoría. El primero disputó 22 partidos con la selección holandesa, y fue el jugador más joven en jugar una Eurocopa hasta Lamine Yamal este verano. Con casi 200 partidos con el PSV y una temporada completa de experiencia en la Premier League en el Newcastle, el jugador de 30 años será una fantástica incorporación para la banda izquierda en un puesto de lateral. Seuntjens llega tras haber pasado casi toda su carrera en la Eredivisie, salvo una temporada en el Genclerbirligi. El centrocampista ofensivo, de 32 años, cubrirá el hueco dejado por Haris Medunjanin, como uno de los principales jugadores creativos del equipo.

El guardameta internacional iraní Amir Abedzadeh y el joven extremo español Alex Calatrava completan las nuevas incorporaciones. Abedzadeh supondrá una fuerte competencia para el mejor jugador de la temporada pasada del Castellón, Gonzalo Crettaz, tras una temporada en Portugal con el Marítimo el año pasado. Calatrava, por su parte, llega después de sus impresionantes actuaciones con el Atlético B el año pasado en Primera RFEF.

Las salidas

Si contamos a los que formaron parte del primer equipo el año pasado, son diez los jugadores que han abandonado Castalia hasta la fecha. Haris Medunjanin ha colgado las botas tras una extraordinaria carrera, pero seguirá siendo el ayudante de Dick Schreuder, y continuará siendo una presencia importante en el vestuario después de haber desempeñado un papel tan crucial la pasada temporada.

Manu Sánchez, uno de los jugadores más importantes del Castellón en sus dos años en el club, juega ahora en el Gornik Zabrze de la primera división polaca, en lo que supone una fantástica oportunidad para demostrar su calidad ante rivales de mayor nivel. Ha empezado con buen pie, con un gol en sólo cuatro partidos.

Iago Indias, Julio Gracia y Borja Granero han encontrado nuevos clubes en Primera RFEF, al fichar por el Ibiza, el Intercity y el Alcoyano, respectivamente.

Iosifov y Veldwijk, fichados en enero, se han marchado a Eslovenia y Tailandia, y Jake Carney juega ahora en el Newport County de la League Two inglesa. Gervane Kastaneer sigue sin club, mientras que Mamadou Traoré regresó al Union Saint-Gilloise tras finalizar su cesión.

Resultados de pretemporada

La pretemporada no significa nada, pero ganar no hace daño. Y tras perder su primer partido contra el Levante, los albinegros respondieron a la perfección, con algunas actuaciones dominantes en particular. El 6-0 al Elche, de Segunda División, fue probablemente el resultado más destacado, con goles de De Miguel, Douglas, Lottin, Cipenga, Villahermosa y Raúl Sánchez.

También fue impresionante la victoria por 6-1 sobre el Gimnàstic, que el año pasado se quedó a las puertas del ascenso a Segunda División. Thomas Van den Belt aprovechó para marcar su primer gol con el club en otra actuación dominante.

Expectativas de la temporada

Como recién ascendido, el primer objetivo es la permanencia. Sin embargo, el Castellón tiene plantilla para ir más allá. Ya la temporada pasada, los datos sugieren que su plantilla habría sido lo suficientemente buena como para mantenerse en Segunda División, y dado que eliminó al Oviedo en la Copa del Rey con media plantilla y llevó al Osasuna de la Liga a la prórroga, los resultados lo respaldan.

Así que, con el mercado que han tenido, da la sensación de que aspirarán a más, con el objetivo más probable de acabar en la zona media de la tabla. No es raro que a los recién ascendidos les vaya bien en Segunda División: el Racing de Ferrol fue 10º el año pasado, y estuvo un tiempo en puestos de playoff. Sin embargo, este año la liga parece más dura, con los otros ascendidos (Deportivo, Málaga y Córdoba) jugando también a un nivel altísimo.

Alcanzar los playoffs, o incluso coquetear con ellos, sería una temporada increíblemente exitosa, y aunque será extremadamente difícil, no me extrañaría que el equipo de Dick Schreuder diera la sorpresa.

Un nuevo nombre para Castalia

La gran noticia del verano para el club fuera del campo fue el cambio de nombre de Castalia, que ahora se conoce oficialmente como SkyFi Castalia. Tras conseguir un nuevo convenio que otorgaba al club el derecho a vender los derechos de denominación, el club ya ha aprovechado la oportunidad y ha llegado a un acuerdo con la empresa de imágenes por satélite con sede en Austin.

La temporada 2023-2024 del Castellón concluyó a principios de junio, y vaya temporada. Ascenso a La Liga 2, goles, más goles, y aunque hubo un par de momentos complicados, el entrenador Dick Schreuder estará encantado con cómo han ido las cosas en su primera temporada en Castalia. Al igual que el año pasado, y para completar las formalidades de final de temporada, he pedido a X que vote en los Premios Pam Pam de Fútbol y determine el ganador de una serie de categorías al estilo de la NBA. Éstas son:

• Jugador más mejorado

• Mejor fichaje de invierno

• Suplente con más impacto del año

Tras unos días de votaciones, los resultados ya están aquí y, a diferencia del año pasado, apenas ha habido debate sobre los merecidos ganadores de cada premio.

MVP: Gonzalo Crettaz (77.4%)

Segundo puesto: Haris Medunjanin (17.3%)

En toda mi vida viendo fútbol a todos los niveles, nunca he visto a un portero ser tan importante para un equipo como lo ha sido Gonzalo Crettaz para el Castellón este año. Los superlativos se agotaron hace tiempo para la actuación del argentino esta temporada, como último defensa en un sistema táctico que requiere excelencia y una fenomenal inteligencia futbolística en esa función.

La brillantez de la temporada de Crettaz no estuvo sólo en sus reflejos, sino también en su capacidad para ser el undécimo jugador de campo. Su lista de paradas más destacadas de este año es interminable, es difícil saber por dónde empezar. Pero su lectura del juego y sus decisiones a la hora de salir a despejar en situaciones en las que la defensa se había visto sorprendida fue también una parte importante de por qué el Castellón tenía la confianza para atacar con tanta libertad. La defensa sabía que si algo pasaba, el rival tendría que lidiar con la anticipación de Crettaz para llegar primero al balón.

Apareció en los grandes momentos, ninguno como cuando se enfrentó desde el punto de penalti a Pedro León, del Real Murcia, a los nueve minutos del tiempo añadido, que tuvo la oportunidad de aguar la fiesta del ascenso al Castellón. De todo lo que pudo pasar, qué justo que fuera el mejor jugador del Castellón el que hiciera la parada que les dio el ascenso, después de que el Córdoba perdiera al día siguiente. Fue sin duda el momento más memorable de la temporada, y por supuesto tuvo que ser el de Gonzalo.

El equipo andaluz acabó segundo a cinco puntos del Castellón, tras el flojo final de temporada de los albinegros. Y aunque quizá sea simplista decir que Gonzalo marcó la diferencia, creo que se podría argumentar facilmente.

Sería imposible terminar esta sección sin una mención a Haris Medunjanin, un jugador que aportó tanto fuera como dentro del campo. El recibimiento que tuvo en su último partido como profesional, contra su antiguo equipo, el Deportivo, habla por sí solo del impacto que tuvo el bosnio, no sólo como fuerza creativa del equipo, sino también como mentor y enlace entre la filosofía de Dick y los jugadores.

Jugador defensivo del año: Alberto Jiménez (64%)

Segundo puesto: Daijiro Chirino (27,5%)

Alberto Jiménez es lo que aparece cuando buscas central en el diccionario. El canario fue la piedra angular de la zaga castellonense durante toda la temporada, el último hombre antes de Gonzalo y, a menudo, el encargado de hacer la última entrada. Fichado en verano procedente del Córdoba tras un par de años complicados, se encontró a gusto en Castalia y en junio fue recompensado con una ampliación de contrato hasta 2026. Es el jugador de campo que más minutos ha jugado después de Jesús De Miguel y Daijiro Chirino, y ha demostrado una gran regularidad y fiabilidad en los momentos más importantes.

Jugador más mejorado: Daijiro Chirino (60%)

Segundo puesto: Israel Suero (22,7%)

Segundo clasificado para el premio al mejor jugador defensivo del año, el curazoleño de 22 años ha hecho grandes progresos desde su llegada en verano procedente del PEC Zwolle. Tras unos cuantos partidos en el banquillo, Chirino se ha afianzado en la alineación titular, casi siempre como central derecho en la defensa de tres.

Puede que haya ganado el premio por esta temporada, pero lo cierto es que toda la carrera de Chirino ha sido un ejemplo de mejora y desarrollo. Originalmente extremo en las categorías inferiores del PEC Zwolle, pasó a jugar de lateral y finalmente de central en el sistema de Schreuder. Su perfil atlético es una característica crucial para un defensa en el 3-5-2 de Dick, en el que se espera que los defensas se muevan muy arriba y necesiten capacidad para correr hacia atrás y, potencialmente, recuperar terreno.

A pesar de algunos momentos de inexperiencia, Chirino es posiblemente el jugador del Castellón con mayor valor de reventa potencial en el futuro, y seguirá mejorando bajo la tutela de Dick Schreuder, así como con la oportunidad de jugar en segunda división. Parece que el deseo de encontrar defensas ágiles, rápidos y atléticos no hace más que crecer en las divisiones superiores, y todo apunta a que es cuestión de tiempo que Chirino empiece a suscitar el interés de grandes clubes si mantiene su positiva evolución.

Mejor fichaje de invierno: Douglas Aurélio

Segundo puesto: Albert Lottin (14%)

El brasileño fue posiblemente el fichaje más importante del mercado de invierno, ya que los albinegros pagaron al Riga FC una cantidad de dinero para hacerse con sus servicios. Tras necesitar algunos partidos para adaptarse a una nueva liga y a un nuevo sistema, se destapó en los últimos encuentros de la temporada, y fue seguramente el jugador más destacado del Castellón en ese periodo.

Después de marcar su primer gol con el club en su segundo partido como titular ante el Real Madrid Castilla, sumó otros cinco goles y una asistencia en once apariciones, incluidos tantos en los dos partidos de la final de la Liga de Campeones contra el Deportivo de La Coruña.

Jugador muy creativo y técnico, también demostró su capacidad para competir bien en el juego aéreo, marcando de cabeza en dos ocasiones. La decisión del club de contratarlo a largo plazo hasta 2028 subraya la confianza que tienen en su potencial, y con sólo 25 años parece alguien que podría tener un gran impacto la próxima temporada en la segunda división y más allá.

Suplente con más impacto del año: Israel Suero (82%)

Segundo puesto: Mamadou Traoré (8.7%)

Tras incorporarse en el mercado de invierno de la temporada pasada, Israel Suero demostró por fin lo que podía hacer en sus apariciones este año. A menudo lastrado por las lesiones, el centrocampista ofensivo sólo jugó dos partidos completos de 90 minutos esta temporada, pero por minuto jugado fue el jugador más productivo del equipo, con un gol o una asistencia cada 101 minutos.

Ha sido más suplente que titular durante la temporada regular, de ahí que se le haya concedido el premio. Sin embargo, existe la sensación de que habría sido titular en más partidos si no hubiera sufrido lesiones, y gran parte de su mejor trabajo se produjo cuando tuvo la oportunidad de ser titular. Con la marcha de Cristian en el mercado de invierno, la zurda de Suero se convirtió en la mejor opción del Castellón en las jugadas a balón parado, y el madrileño podrá aportar su granito de arena la próxima temporada si se mantiene en forma.

Busca la palabra sinergia en el diccionario y verás algo parecido. Sin embargo, esta temporada se pueden reescribir los diccionarios y dar una definición mucho más sencilla: el Club Deportivo Castellón. Sin duda, hubo muchos factores claves en la temporada de los albinegros, pero por encima de todos ellos estuvo la creación de una identidad con la que jugar. Un faro por el que guiarse si el mar se agitaba. Es algo de lo que pocos clubes son conscientes, y sin lo cual el éxito sostenido a cualquier nivel es casi imposible.

Bob Voulgaris entiende el riesgo mejor que casi nadie en la tierra. Por eso prospera cuando los asume. Cuando apostó la mayor parte de sus ahorros a que los Lakers ganarían el campeonato de la NBA, no se trataba sólo de una apuesta "all-in", sino de un reflejo de la disparidad entre las cuotas de las casas de apuestas y la posibilidad real de que ocurriera, el EV (valor esperado), como les gusta llamarlo a los apostantes. Y fue fácil identificar el valor esperado en las reglas más fundamentales del fútbol cuando cambió de deporte y compró el Castellón en 2022: 3 puntos por victoria, 1 por empate y 0 por derrota.

Si los triples en la NBA estaban infravalorados hace 20 años, valiendo un 50% más que los tiros de dos, imagínense la cara de Bob cuando miró al fútbol y vio que ganar era un 200% mejor que empatar, pero que la mayoría de los equipos seguían buscando defender el 1-0 en lugar de intentar confirmar la victoria e ir a por los dos, y jugar al empate cuando se enfrentaban a un equipo supuestamente mejor. La ventaja estaba ahí para ser explotada, y la identidad, por tanto, estaba establecida: siempre al ataque, siempre a por la victoria, un empate es el peor resultado posible, ya que probablemente significa que no has atacado lo suficiente.

Cualquier posible contratación de entrenador, y cualquiera en la parte deportiva, tendría que entenderlo, y vivir según ello. Por desgracia para Rubén Torrecilla, el entrenador que estaba al mando cuando Bob compró el club, no lo hizo. Hubo cierta sorpresa entre los aficionados cuando fue despedido en diciembre de 2022 con el equipo segundo en la clasificación, pero en realidad era previsible. Empatar el 30% de los partidos era demasiado ineficaz, sobre todo cuando el equipo jugaba a menudo para aguantar el resultado.

Albert Rudé, el hombre elegido para dirigir al equipo en la segunda mitad de aquella temporada, no acabó de mejorar la situación. De hecho, empeoró ligeramente, con un porcentaje de empates del 34%, mientras el Castellón se quedaba a las puertas del ascenso a través de los playoffs. Bob lamentó el planteamiento prudente adoptado en la final contra el Alcorcón, y llegó el momento de traer al hombre al que había echado el ojo durante mucho tiempo.

Dick Schreuder se incorporó recién ascendido a la Eredivisie con el PEC Zwolle -cuatro empates en 38 partidos y 99 goles- y por fin Bob tenía a alguien que encajaba realmente con su identidad. Se había alcanzado la sinergia.

Al principio hubo algunos problemillas, sobre todo para algunos jugadores. La pretemporada fue dura, ya que se adaptaron a las exigencias físicas de Dick y a su nuevo estilo de juego y pasaron de dudar a creer, pero dio sus frutos desde el primer partido contra el Málaga. Salieron a por todas y nunca miraron atrás. La ventaja física se hizo evidente en la primera mitad de la temporada, en la que se deshicieron de los equipos con su presión y su ataque implacable.

En el momento de escribir estas líneas, el equipo tiene un récord conjunto en Primera RFEF con 82 puntos a falta de un partido, 74 goles a favor (9 más que el récord anterior) y sólo cuatro empates, algo menos del 11%, que yo sepa también un récord europeo en 2023/24. Estos son los números que preveía Voulgaris allá por 2022, y que finalmente se han hecho realidad en su segunda temporada al frente del club.

Schreuder fue identificado a través de datos como uno de los pocos entrenadores que realmente sería capaz de llevar a cabo lo que Bob tenía en mente, sin lo cual nada de esto habría sucedido. La relación entre el presidente y el entrenador del Castellón es tan cercana que resulta difícil imaginar que no continúe en un futuro próximo: "hermanos para toda la vida", como Bob publicó en Twitter tras conquistar el título. Sin embargo, independientemente de que Schreuder acabe dirigiendo algún día a un equipo de la élite europea -algo que parece probable que suceda tarde o temprano-, el perfil del entrenador de Castalia está tan fijado, la identidad tan definida, que quienquiera que sea el próximo en ser elegido debería encajar a la perfección.

A lo largo de la historia del fútbol, el entrenador ha sido el sol y todos los demás integrantes del club planetas del sistema solar. Sin embargo, los Ferguson, los Wenger y los Guy Roux son ya figuras del pasado. El deporte ha cambiado, al menos en los clubes "inteligentes". En clubes como el Castellón, el Brighton o el Liverpool, la identidad marcada por la directiva es ahora el sol, y el entrenador es un planeta, aunque mucho más importante que los demás. La identidad del equipo dicta al entrenador, el entrenador no dicta la identidad del equipo.

Tal vez, lo más difícil de encontrar sea un propietario con la suficiente convicción en un planteamiento para dirigir un club de esa manera, o incluso un propietario con un planteamiento alguno. ¿Cuántos clubes en el mundo del fútbol tienen realmente una identidad que no cambiará independientemente del entrenador? ¿Un producto que está tan grabado en piedra, que los aficionados pueden estar seguros de lo que obtendrán semana tras semana? El Castellón se encuentra sin duda en esa corta lista: empieza en la directiva, sigue con el entrenador, sigue con los jugadores y probablemente hasta con el cocinero y el nutricionista. Toma nota RAE, porque así es como se define la sinergia.
